Good morning Switcher Saturday crew, and wishing all you a good Memorial Day weekend.

Switcher Saturday is a weekly thread where we celebrate the smaller locomotives that do the big work of railroading.

For a kickoff image this week we have a shot from the archives. W&LE 0-6-0 on the Filing Cabinet Central.

Since it is Memorial Day weekend, let us never forget those who sacrificed it all for our freedoms.  My father and mother were in the Air Force during Vietnam and many of their friends didn't come home. Many more before and since have lost fathers brothers and sons.  Never forget the sacrifices laid on the Altar of Freedom for us and those to follow.

And on a super happy note,  meet Socks:

Socks is a Corgi Mix and is the new addition to the Z house. (And also the reason there is we are starting with an archive shot this morning. )

Have a great weekend everyone.

Yay SWSat is on track!

Wow that Socks character is a looker. Gotta keep an eye on him.

This week I have a dog’s breakfast of images. Starting with a 1930’s versus Today pics of a sawmill. I have permission to post this. Then a today image of a one stall logging engine house  ash pit and concrete foundation that was near this mill. Then a flat car stake pocket I dug up literally in my yard which was the yard for this mill.

To keep this Switcher based here is a O scale 2-6-2T Baldwin catalog tank engine. Many importers in the 60’s made this one in HO and O. I have two with totally different drives. Here is the box for one of them.B5B0B444-D25C-4B03-9319-59F7FD0DFDF16021C281-D412-40AC-8B3F-628C6CACFB9E

Have a great long weekend everybody. I can’t wait to see what you post.

Happy SWSat!

Cute pup JHZ!

This week the switcher crews have been given permission to tour the new yard. The track foreman notified the yardmaster that the trackwork has been completed and the yard can begin operating again. The landscape crew still has lots to do but at least freight can begin moving again!

A special thank you to all who served and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Well Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone.  jhz563 thank you for expressing the words on Memorial Day that we should all feel on this occasion and what a great addition to your family.  MELGAR - those 0-6-0 switchers are really neat, I have one of the Lion Chief 2.0 versions and like it very much.  Silver Lake - fascinating historical photos, thanks for posting.

To try to "honor" the theme of Memorial Day, here is an array of Military Service switchers. Presented in the order in which the services are always listed, due to their historical formation within the history of the US.  First is the US Army and the Lionel Transportation Corps switcher working the L&S Harbor Wharf area moving boxcars off the pier and into the staging area where the line power can move them on to their destination.

Army Switcher

Next is the US Navy, moving an aircraft with a switcher from the Philadelphia Navy Yard.  I worked as an engineer at the Naval Air Development Center on the outskirts of Philadelphia but our lab and the Naval Aircraft Factory was originally located at the Navy Yard.

Beep Navy with aircraft

Finally dating only from 1947 the USAF moves some ground to air missiles for self defense during the cold war.  I am old enough to remember the missile base for air defense that was located in our town to protect against the Russian bombers.  Long gone now, these were important facilities in the early 1950's.  This one is my favorite as I am retired Air Force.

Happy Switcher Saturday to all and happy Memorial Day to everyone.  May God bless and protect our service people as they work in the service of our country.

Don

Good morning fellow switcher fans!  Wonderful photos and information everyone!

JHZ563 thanks for notching out the throttle and getting us rolling this morning ... and congrats on the new addition to the family!  Great looking Socks!  Dogs are great ... I got a puppy this past December and he's nothing short of terrific!!

I hope that all of you have a wonderful and safe Memorial Day Weekend!  Remember the fallen from all wars and conflicts.

Today on the Free State Junction Railway the company photographer has been busy this past week snapping photos from around the FSJR system.

Happy switcher Saturday everyone and my deepest honor and respect to all those that laid down their lives for our great country on this Memorial Day weekend.  The weather down here if Florida is spectacular, so after a little morning fishing, we had a nice train running session. Here are two videos of my newest switchers -

Both need to be on MY layout!

Need to pre-order the last of the LIRR MTH RS-3's soon.

Bob

Go for it, Bob. They are both available at Trainworld and are among my favorites. The detailing is superb and the PS3 electronics are smooth as silk. Also, don’t pass on those special run lirr RS3s and the matching caboose in 70s colors. Yes, we will need to remove some numbering and install some blue gray “M”s to complete the look, but its well worth it (it’s also a fun project). As a resident “lawn -guy-lander”, they should be must haves for you. Heck, as a life long Queens resident, living on the western tip of the Island, they are must haves for me.  I know I will regret it if I don’t pick them up. So will you.

As an aside, nice job on the yard. Looks really good. You’re going to be surprised how quickly they fill up with rolling stock and engines!

Here is what my once wide opened yard looks like now. My how quick that filled up, LOL!

TALES OF THE DOCKSIDER

On this Memorial Day weekend, l would also like to express my respect and admiration for those who have served, especially those that perished in defense of our country.

In view of the holiday, it seems appropriate to post another photo of shop switcher X-8688 hauling a cut of flats with military vehicles.  She’s pulling the train to the B&M yard for delivery to Fort Devens in Ayer, MA.8961CE89-09D5-4052-AA75-783537EFC654

As a further tribute, your Yardmaster is posting a photo of GIs training at Fort Devens.  This photo was taken from a helicopter participating in the exercise.
