Good Morning Switcher Fans,

Welcome to Switcher Saturday, Mark II!  If you have an appreciation for little locomotives that do big things, or slightly bigger locomotives used in sometimes less glorious roles, you found the right thread.  Here we show some love for all things switcher loco related, from saddle tankers, to vulcans, to transfer diesels, road switchers,  big loco's pressed in switching service, and yes even the BL-2.

First a quick review of the guidelines for this thread is a bit overdue.

1. Everyone be nice.  This is not usually a problem here and I don't want it to become one.  The strangest thing is that the BL-2 is a locomotives who's appearance invokes more reactions than most.  Keep it all positive, there is enough bad things to think about in the world.

2. Switcher Saturday is open to all scales, gauges, sizes etc.  Got a G-scale gp-7? no problem!  Wanna show off an On3 little critter or an N scale Porter? Go for it.  Obviously on the OGR forum the usual focus is O gauge/scale.

3. We love pictures and videos.  But if you are gonna post here it needs to be yours or something you have the owner's permission to post here.  While us end users see the forum as part of our hobby it is part of a business.  Taking an image from someone else's business and posting here without there permission is against the rules of the OGR forum.  However, if it's cool and you just can't reach the owner, post a link, and most of us will be sure to check it out.

4. Back stories and narratives have greatly expanded here lately, and I feel it really adds to the fun.  To those who feels so inclined, keep up the great work.

Without further ado, Here's my contribution to kick us off.  An mth 0-6-0 that the originator of this thread @Murnane, is somewhat familiar with.  I work at a power plant.  And today a transformer is being delivered on the FCC. (Filing Cabinet Central.)

So please share a photo, video, story, memory etc., and keep those rails shiny!

It's Saturday in Jun, hot and sticky in Small Town as per usual in Southern Georgia.  The crew of the borrowed Southern switcher, the Leonardtown and Savannah is always in debt to "big brother" Southern RR and often uses some of their excess power as a short term lease (management of the L&S being incredibly cheap!).  Today the Southern 44 Ton is in the hands of the L&S local crew from Small Town and it turns out its lunchtime!  So IAW local labor contract, the crew decides to have lunch at the "new" McDonald's restaurant that just opened.  So...they just stop the switcher and jump out for lunch!

I hope its not too hot today, the crew is hauling a refr full of "Blue Bell" Ice Cream.

Happy SwSat everyone!!

Good morning fellow switcher fans!  I'm really enjoying all of your posts!

Personally I'm still trying to digest the shocking news of the closing of MTH Electric Trains in May of 2021.  MTH brought us O gaugers so many wonderful switchers in a broad variety of road names .... many road names of short lines and switching railroads that no other manufacturer has ever offered... road names that were perhaps in operation close to where we grew up or live now.   I for one, am grateful to MTH for offering, The Baltimore and Annapolis, Canton, Maryland and Pennsylvania, and the Patapsco & Back Rivers .... all Maryland short lines and switching roads.  I know many of you have MTH switchers in road names dear to your heart as well.

This latest  offering by MTH excites me.  To my knowledge this is the first time this road name has been offered by MTH. In the MTH 2020 vol. 2 cat., they are offering a RS-1  in the Washington Terminal Company livery. It's RailKing scale.  I am pre - ordering this locomotive.  The Washington Terminal Co. was jointly owned by the B&O and Pennsylvania Railroads and it was WTC switchers that did all the switching at Washington, DC's Union Station.  MTH is offering RS-1 number 46, a switcher that I saw many time in real life as I drove in and out of DC to various gigs in the late 70's/80s.  Many times I would see this locomotive at the Ivy City Locomotive Service facility located alongside New York Ave.  Other times I would see it pulling or pushing a string of AMTRACK passenger coaches into or out of Union Station or the the coach yard.  Since the B&O and Pennsy once owned the WTC, the WTC will fit nicely into the theme of the Free State Junction Railway which is all of Maryland's Class One and Short Line railroads of post WW2 1946- 1960.  And since Washington DC borders Maryland I can fudge a bit .. LOL!

Today's post is a tribute to MTH Electric Trains and Mike Wolf in profound gratitude for the vast variety of road names and switching locomotives they have offered over their many years. ( And all the o gauge locos, rolling stock, imagination and innovation that has enormously aided in catapulting  O gauge modeling to where it is today )   Here is my entire MTH switching fleet in road names of the class ones and short lines of the Free State Junction Railway.  Without the road names mentioned in the above paragraph I would have never been able to realize the short line dimension of the Free State Junction Railway.

A SALUTE TO MTH from the crew of WM BL-2 81, a MTH Premier model. IMG_8901IMG_2247

A RailKing Scale GP 9 " Torpedo boat" with air tanks on the top side.  A dual purpose locomotive for sure. IMG_2126

Patapsco and Back Rivers Baldwin VO-1000 number 146.  Nicknamed by it's employees, the Push Bump and Ram was the switching railroad that served the sprawling Bethlehem Steel Corp. plant in Sparrows Point, Maryland ... just outside Baltimore.  IMG_2257

Baltimore and Annapolis Railroad.  Once the Washington Baltimore & Annapolis Electric Railroad Company who ran interurban passenger trains between these three cities every hour on the hour.   Through a series of bankruptcies the WB&A finally was truncated to trackage between Baltimore and Annapolis finally becoming the Baltimore & Annapolis Railroad Co.  They switched to diesel only/freight only in 1950 as the catenary wires came down and passenger service was dropped.  fullsizeoutput_32d

The B&O offering by MTH include the Dockside and SW - 9.  Here they are in B&O livery. IMG_8960IMG_8917IMG_9514Thank you MTH and Mike Wolf for all the countless hours of creative fun you brought and will continue to bring my way!!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!!  Be well and be safe!!  :-)
