I plan on modeling the trains of the Great Northern from the dates above and would like some info. Lots of it!!! I remember seeing trains coming through my town and they had black tank cars in the consist and these cars were very plain. Very little markings. Can you tell me some info about them and are they available for purchase from some company? Thanks. You forum members are always great.

Those plain black 8000 gallon tank cars are hard to find in 0 gauge. Lionel and Atlas have both made scale tankers of that size and type, but Lionel has never done the plain black paint job that I know of. Atlas has done them in plain black, lettered for UTLX and one or two others, but to put together a train of them at Atlas prices is not cheap. You could get the look at less cost by taking some Lionel or Williams traditional size tank cars, removing the railings around the dome, and painting them black. They are modeled after larger cars that were used for chemicals, but they are about the same size as a scale 8000 gallon oil car.
Red Caboose offered 10,000 gal Type 103W tank cars and Intermountain made 8,000 gal cars. Both are still fairly easy to come by. San Juan Car Company just came out with some highly detailed small tank cars.
