This is a sidebar, but, in the days before distance counters became part of the locomotive control stand, I used to use the pole line to tell where the rear end was. Leaving San Bernardino in both directions, we had a curve with a speed restriction. I counted poles until the Conductor called "'Round the curve," from the waycar. After that, I already had the engine in Run-8, picking up speed, as the waycar left any speed restrictions.
