Ten-wheeler whistle steam

ALL the fluid goes into the smoke stack.  It is a double unit for the smoke and whistle.

There is a plastic tube running from the smoke whistle chamber back to the whistle hole.

You now have a lot of smoke fluid in the tube preventing smoke from getting thru.

Turn the engine upside down to attempt to get the fluid to run out of the whistle hole.

I've had a couple people recommend adding a maximum of 18 drops of smoke fluid at a time. Since I'm new to trying out smoke, I'm wondering how long the smoke fluid should last before refilling? And does it evaporate if the loco isn't run for a while?

Just a FYI 18 drops will NOT fill a new dry smoke unit. The manual will never say it but most on here will start around 30-40 especially with a DSMK (Dual chamber smoke unit).

A quick blow in the whistle steam hole with a soda straw or similar to clear out the smoke fluid laying there will probably get the whistle smoke going.  That's now where you add smoke fluid for the 10-wheeler.

Turning the loco upside down did the trick - now the whistle smokes when blown. Now that brings up a different question: is there a way to clean off the smoke fluid from the loco without risking damaging the paint?

The smoke fluid will not harm the paint.

However, clean it up, dabbing it with a tissue.  Sometimes I use Q tips.

Then use a damp soft cloth to finish up.

What he said.  You can also use Naphtha (lighter fluid) for cleaning.  Be careful with alcohol of any kind, that goes after some of the paints used on our models, though not usually the locomotive paint.

If you ever order or use mega-steam products I like their B-Gone cleaner they offer, does a good job and hasn’t harmed any paint yet

I just ran the 4-6-0 for the first time. The whistle smoke is nice except that it doesn’t come out of the the whistle! That hole in the boiler really doesn’t cut it.
But I have another question that I feel like a fool for asking since I’ve been building layouts for over 50 years and TMCC since the beginning. The instructions for the ten wheeler says that you press the “set” button to set the number for the loco. But there is no “set” button on a CAB-1, which I use ( and have used for all of Lionel K- Line locos. What obvious thing am I missing?  Also does it matter whether I leave the Bluetooth on or off?  Thanks

The "Set" button should be under the little plastic cover at the bottom of the CAB-1.  Slide it down to reveal the Set and momentum buttons.

It's often befuddled me why they put a cover over those buttons.  They came to their senses with the Legacy CAB2, but retained it for the CAB1L.  First thing I do is remove those covers and stash them in one of my parts boxes!

Many of the models with whistle steam are the same way.  A few have actually run the smoke through the whistle, but the tiny hole tends to get blocked, so for reliability, the hole in the boiler is better.
