Testing a TMCC equipped loco with a traditional transformer

Hi all,

I have several 3 rail tmcc equipped locos that I would like to test.  But I don't have any 3 rail track, power supplies, or command systems.  The locos were purchased with the intent of converting them to 2-rail at some point.  A fellow division member has offered to help me test the engines, but only has a traditional Lionel transformer for power, no tmcc.  

Can I test the tmcc locos with a regular transformer without damaging anything?  At least to see if they run?  I presume that added features like sound or lights will be limited with the tmcc controller, if they function at all.

Any tips would be appreciated.  I don't want to ruin any of the electronics in these models.

Thanks for the help Gregg.  I was able to test the engines.  We were using some sort of vintage Lionel transformer.  I could get engine sounds and lights, but could only get the horn to sound on one engine.  I don't know if that is a product of the controller or the power applied to the track.  It's fine either way.  All units are used and I will indicate the details if I try to sell them.
