I know this is a dumb question but which line of new Lionel Products, specifically engines etc. work with the older tubular track and transformer systems without changing anything? I asked the reps at the local train show and they had no idea. I know some don't work anymore with the older systems and layouts so I want to make sure.

Thanks

technically anything O scale will work on the old tube rail track with old transformers.  Below are the points to note though:

1. some new stuff requires a large turning radius.  Make sure the diameter of your tube rail can handle

2. LionChief Engines only function from their remote.  that means you set your old transformer to full power and then run the train with the remote.  (LionChief Plus works with the transformer or its included remote)

many people often point out to have proper circuit protection to avoid damaging electrical components of new engines, as the old transformers don't protect against that type of issue the way new ones should.

Thanks for the info. Part 2 of the question then is, what is the difference between Lion Chief and Lion Chief Plus?

Also what is Legacy Control?

Jagsandtrains:

"Already preordered the Niagara 6005!"

And I already pre-ordered the Pilot Niagara. So that's 2 Niagaras they've sold, for sure.

------------

I wish that they would tweak the tooling and offer a #5500 Niagara - the experimental one with the poppet valves. Visually the only notable differences were the air pumps on either side in the running boards (to make room for the valves in the pilot deck area) and a lack of visible piston valve gear (no eccentric, valve gear, hanger, etc).

But, if they did, I'd be ordering another Niagara, and, whew. One of my brass Williams versions could be modified relatively easily (famous last words) to the 5500, though.

Possibly the Niagara.  Was looking forward to some vision line milk cars to go with it, but might try the baggage cars.  However, I'm a bit disappointed that the vision line baggage car will have those hideous buttons on the couplers.  I'm assuming these baggage cars will be plastic also, but it does not mention it.

Lion Chief Plus will work without the remote, simple conventional raise and lower the voltage on a transformer handle.

Legacy is command control (wireless remote, control of more features than Lion Chief or Lion Chief Plus, requires command base and remote not included with engine purchase).

These are defined in the front of the catalog (at least they have been - I didn't just re-confirm).  It's a good tutorial.

The catalog is certainly fun to look at but for the most part stuff is too expensive. There must be quite a mark up because over the next year we will be seeing substantial discounts (at least I hope). If Lionel was serious about attracting youngsters into the hobby they would sell stuff like the Harry Potter set or the Polar express set and accessories for more reasonable prices. Just my two  cents.

Jefny

Since I love starter sets and passenger line stuff, and I'm a New Yorker, the LIRR set is a must, as well as the Santa Fe.

It's also cool that the horse car and corral are back. It makes me want that 5 Star General set!

I agree with Gary--the video caboose looks fun, as well as a few LC+ engines.

If I ran the circus,  they'd make these starter sets 027 compatible, and put out an optional LC+ engine for all the starter sets, but I'm still happy with what is there! Nice, Lionel!

Well,

The first thing I saw was Muffins email and H10 hit me right between the eyes. OMG!! Finally an NYC H10 Mikado! Any NYC fan knows that H10 and NYC Mikado are mutually inclusive terms.

I started scroll down Muffins site and pre order one right then and there.  But wait, lets look at the catalog, since I am in a buying mood maybe I will see something else to order.

The Lionel page could not load fast enough. Finally the catalog opens up. There is the Niagara, - I'm happy with the CCII version, I keep clicking, got to see that NYC H10 Mikado!!!

I clicked the mouse a couple more times and OH NO, IT'S A PENNSY H10 CONSILIDATION BUMMMMMMER!!

Oh well, I will have to wait until I get a hard copy of the new Lionel Catalog. Maybe a freight car or two.

The price of the 2 6 6 2 caught my eye. Do you remember when they had a hard time dumping the TMCC version years ago or $700?

I made a pledge that the Pennsy VL GG1 would be my last big engine purchase. Well I can keep my promise until the next catalog comes out.

Thanks,

Richard
