There have been other posts about ore cars, thought it would be fun though to have a thread to talk about the different cars available in the marketplace.

I'm anxiously waiting the latest RMT offerings.  I really like the the old Atlas tooling that went to K-Line, then RMT.  The Lionel and MTH cars also get run time by me..

Dimensionally I favor the RMT cars.  Walter does a fine job with the decoration too!

I replace all of my loads with those created by my friend Don Kane. @rail

To set the record straight...RMT is NOT using old Atlas (or K-line) tooling. The RMT 967xx series Ore Cars are being produced from totally new tooling owned and designed by RMT. These RMT ore cars feature many details (including stirrups on each end) that will indeed make the RMT cars a great addition to any 3-rail O-gauge model railroad. Suggested retail is $29.95 for each ore car and includes diecast trucks/metal wheels/operating couplers with separate air hose detail. Artwork - painting design and reference details are researched and created in the USA by Walter M. Matuch using prototype references and include unique additional information for each RR name offered.

Currently RMT will be producing over 30 different RR name ore cars including Custom Runs. You can pre-order them now at many local hobby stores, or try an OGR Forum sponsor dealer because RMT does not sell online through the RMT information-only website... www.readymadetoys.com

Thanks.

Good info. Walter! Another question, will the trucks be Bettendorf or R.B.? Or both depending on the era?

I originally thought you were going to offer LI ore's but I decided to make my own set since they were cancelled. I would consider adding 2 more RMT's if they were in the red L.I. as shown above. Hope you will still consider doing them.

Hi Walter,

Question:  Why are some vendors (Example Hennings) limiting us to an order of only 4?

Does that limit come from you guys?

Thanks,

John

Do not understand your comment as do not seem to be any such restrictions that I can see on Henning's website. The only 'number' I can view is that Henning's is selling certain ore cars as a 2-car set but no minimum order of sets or other individual cars is visible.

Pat's Trains is selling WEST VIRGINIA woodchip cars in a 4 car set  but that is for 1 each of 4 different Lumber Company names. Other roadnames like CHESSIE woodchip 3-car set as C&O-B&O-WM. But again, no restriction as to quantity.

I do not think any dealer is limiting how many cars you can buy as long as it is in a selection that they offer. RMT is not limiting purchases, only that up to 300 cars of each RR name will be produced.

Have you personally talked with these dealers to confirm/explain your question about quantity?

Thanks

No.  I probably should call.  I tried to put six Strasburg in the shopping basket and it consistently was automatically changed to four.  Would not allow a larger number.  I tried emailing, but they never responded.  Maybe a glitch.  I'll just call.

EDIT:  Actually Pat's Trains just allowed six in the basket.

Thanks,

John

I really like the RMT jennies as the detail is really nice and price is unbeatable.  I have several of the MTH offerings too.  From what I can tell, the RailKing and Premier versions are identical and only differ (maybe) in the couplers/trucks, but I'm not positive.

This is probably my favorite car in my entire collection, a gift from my father.

Looking forward to my first ore cars. I didn't know that RMT made such nice ones. These 3-car sets are a special run for Patrick's. I live in the town where Picatinny Arsenal is ... cool car for me.

... These were made for the Sterling Hill Mine in Ogdensburg, NJ as a custom run of 300 (SKU: 6-22207). I have 4 and want to pick up a few more to make a nice zinc ore train.

Very cool, Bryce! Wouldn't mind having one. I just quickly looked around .... one just sold for $125 at eBay. Wow ... are these things that valuable/rare?

Jim,

We live in a small world, my grandmother whom I visited all the time as a kid lived in a nearby town where I remember dishes rattling every time Picatinny or Tilcon blew things up.
Thank you for being a bad influence, I Just purchased 3 sets from Pat...

According to the museum, Lionel only made 300 the "Horse Head Products" ore cars. I guess they are rare. Dang! I didn't know there was one on eBay, I would have bid on it.

My only O scale ore cars are some of the original Atlas ones when they came in all plastic and in kit form.  Nice looking cars, but I still have to build them!  I also enjoyed the Varney HO ones that came as pairs in a kit.  They were before my time, but very nice cars and easy builds.

Here in Arizona, the Gadsden & Pacific Railroad Museum in Tucson has done something in the ballpark of 30 custom runs for local mines here in AZ.  To those that collect ore cars, finding them all is considered desirable.

Also in HO, MDC Roundhouse made a nice PRR specific ore car that I need to dig out and photograph.  Finally don't forget about the 3rd Rail battleship gondolas that are in production.  I saw the prototype version in person and they are very cool with their six wheel trucks.

I really like the original Atlas Jennys.  Once you remove the coupler and replace them with Kadees, they sit very nicely on the trucks.  None of the other offerings seem to get this right.

I agree, I once had a string of thirty or so of them modified with the Atlas two-rail wheelsets and (originally) the Atlas scale couplers. That made a nice train. I did weigh each car with some taconite pellets found when railfanning the Port Road just north of Perryville.
