I wondered that years ago Chuck, never could figure why they did that.  I used to use a ton of normal SMA connectors when I was building video products for the NYSE and member firms in the 80's and 90's, still have a box of gold plated SMA connector cables around here somewhere.  When WiFi came along big time, I thought I had a sea of useful cables, only to find out they did the screwball reverse pin nonsense!   There didn't seem to be any rational reason for changing the connector type, and I never did understand why they had to make it difficult to connect the WiFi stuff with all the existing hardware that would have worked just fine.
