Instead of my usual set of photos of the ex-PRR bridge across the Ohio River, I took some photos from atop McKims Ridge.  This is just south of Weirton, north of Follansbee, and provides a really cool view of Steubenville, the Ohio River, and the railroad bridge.

We begin by looking south on the Ohio River.  In the distance is the single track bridge for Wheeling Steel.  I believe this is called the La Bell Bridge.  In the foreground is half of the Market Street Bridge (now over 100 years old).  Early in its history I believe it carried trolley traffic.  At this point in time (and as far back as I can remember) it has a grate roadbed.

Market Street runs west into the center of Steubenville.

This is the northern side of Steubenville.  It's hard to see, but the Historic Brownstone area lies just west of the corner of the railroad bridge.

West Virginia Route 2 is in the right foreground, with a single track heading south towards Wheeling.  In the center of the photo is the ex-PRR bridge.  The Veterans Memorial bridge (automobiles) is directly behind it.

Another view showing more of Route 2.

This is the Steubenville end of the bridge.  Ohio Route 7 passes underneath.  Closer to the river is another track.

Below is the eastern end of the bridge.

More of WV Route 2 as it reaches Weirton.

That's my hometown! That's where my love of trains began and that bridge was a sight to see. Especially when it had two tracks and two trains passing over it at once. I tell you I get excited just thinking about it. Those were the days when Conrail ran those rails.

In the fourth pic, to the right, you can see the new addition to the high school I went to. Go Big Red!

George,

I see McKim’s Ridge looks like a great vantage point!  The Railroad bridge shows up well!  When was the Veterans Memorial Bridge built.  It reminds me of the new bridge in Wheeling.  Same basic design??

I think the Veterans Bridge was built in the 1990s, but don't quote me.  I don't know anything at all about the Wheeling bridge.

Steubenville will be represented on my layout.  I haven't worked out all the details yet, but I expect to have the corner of Market Street and 4th Street, 6th Street (and the railroad station), the S.S. Kresge, and a number of nice stores.  I will also have a seedier part of town south of the intersection.

The Veterans Memorial Bridge opened to traffic on May 1, 1990. Here are some links about it:

And to get us back on track (pun intended) with the subject PRR Ohio River bridge:

Thank you for those links on the Veterans Bridge.

I have seen those last three links related to the railroad bridge as well.  Over the past 5 years I've made a number of photographic trips to the bridge and posted the results on the OGR Forum.  Here are those links:
