Hello, I just got a locomotive MTH 20 - 2081 2-1 it is a gp60m Santa Fe. When I got it home and turn the volume down a little bit I can hear a constant ticking sound from the rear wheels. If it's going maybe a simulated 10 miles per hour you'll probably hear maybe five ticks per second. If I lift up the rear wheels they will still be running and spinning and I do not hear the sound. It is only when it is down on the track. I have checked the Center rail rollers by hand and hear nothing. Anybody else know if this is normal or not?. None of the other engines I've ever had do anything like this at all. Even with sound on at a moderate volume I can hear it. It's hard for me to tell but I also think the front one might be doing it a little bit too but not totally sure is the rear truck is quite noisy. As best I can tell it is a relatively evenly spaced click.

It still sounds like it might be roller click to me. Try a drop of conductive lube on the roller pins and see if it lessens or goes away.
I don't own any MTH motive power, but I've had a few MTH cabooses that had clicking rollers out of the box.
I’d agree with Rick, ....try this for just a second or two, ....wrap a hunk of electrical tape around the the pickup you think is making noise...let it drag on the vinyl tape just long enough to see if your clicking goes away....at least you’ll know who the offender is.....Pat
I have two that do the same thing. An mth aand lionel diesel. It's been on my list forever to diagnose it. You say clicking roller... hmmm.
I was thinking along the same lines of throwing some tape on him real quick but figured I'll just go ahead and oil the pickup rollers. Clicking gone. Never ran into that before even on older engines I've had so I kind of convinced myself that the clicking was too noticeable to be fixed by oil but guess I was wrong.
On a slightly related issue, do you guys actually Grease the gears or do you just oil them too?

I’m sure this will start the thread rolling....on my stuff, I grease gears, and oil the shafts they ride on....I’m not getting into types, brands, viscosity, or whatever, ....I use what I like....and everyone else can use what they like....that’s what’s great about this hobby....what works for me makes me happy! ..........Pat
I am glad you got your clicking noises solved Johnny....chalk one up for Rick......he hit that one on the head!......Pat
