Yes as Barry said you can run in that manner, however IMO it limits you in so many ways. Save your money and invest in a Z4K with the side receiver, in this manner you can run conventional thru the TR in 2 different modes, the Z4k mode and the TIU mode. The older conventional engines run smooth as glass in this way, and you can run your P2/P3 engines at the same time, even on the same track if you so desire.
IMO the best way to power your TIU is thru the Aux Port with the RS 18/24 power supply, which allows full shut down control of your layout.

Well I ran it that way on old layout and it didn't limit me to anything before I ran ps2 PS3 and conventional and being I only have 1 track can only run 1 train at a time
