BACKGROUND: I am investigating a sale item for purchase: LIONEL6-31705 50TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATIVE SET. The Seller indicates “looks to be in like new condition”, with

  • Lights that tested fine in all passenger cars
  • Battery was put into tender - sound that tested worked great and the light also working
  • Engine was tested in conventional mode … ran forward and backwards

OPEN ISSUE: The seller (a non-train person) indicates he cannot get the TMCC controlled engine front light to work … suggested in the manual it says check that the ‘auxiliary 2’ command was not used to turn off the front headlight. The seller is unclear what to do … SO the seller is leaving that function unresolved for the sale, expecting the buyer to contend with the unknown.

  • The seller also indicated, the original owner has said he put the number ‘43’ (I am guessing engine #) into his TMCC again, but what might that do pertaining to the engine’s headlight not working is not clear.
  • The seller never did indicate that when the engine was tested in conventional mode was the notice on or off.

I now have my first TMCC and Legacy engines, but my experience with these Lionel products is almost non-existent. I would like to give the seller a way to clear the issue if possible, otherwise it becomes my risk in buying this engine and hence his whole set.

POSSIBLE ENGINE LIGHT CAUSES: What could be the light issue: burnt out bulb, improper or missing TMCC command, others…? Any thoughts, suggestions?

Thanks for reading and any help you can offer ...

I assume this is the "coffee seller" on the big auction site.

While judging from the feedback, some folks have gotten good deals on good items.

I can also tell you from personal experience "some" things he's selling have lots of issues.

I purchased a TMCC RS11 that from outward appearance had little to no run time. Wheels and rollers looked virtually new.

When I received it. It ran horrible, and there was worn screwheads on  incorrect/non factory screws holding the shell on. It looked like it had been apart a dozen times.

Another case of, " if it looks to good to be true, it probably is.

Having said that, this seller stands behind their guarantee and is being honest when he says he"doesnt know" if there's a problem. However, his lack of knowledge selling second hand o guage stuff leaves lots of room for issues and disappointment.

The fact that he is unable to test Tmcc means a fair amount of risk for unforseen problems. With the volume of product he's selling . A Tmcc set for testing would help him sell more trains...or maybe not.

Lastly imo, his asking price is a bit high for that set.  There's a Legacy J3a on there, for a price that leaves enough money for a separate sale passenger set. You end up with more whistles and bells, and maybe less issues.

Like PAT and RICK a have stated, probably a burnt out bulb.  That set is a great set but his asking price is way to high.  As I have stated in my latest Whistle Stop Wednesday Video, I saw this set at YORK, the seller there was asking only $545.00 for this beauty of a set. I would wait for this to come up again.  Here is my review of this set if you are interested.

At which York? The most recent one?

I've never seen this set offered anywhere near that low.  Not online, not at auctions, not at shows.  $750 absolute lowest, which I considered a good price at the time.  That was 2017, before the pandemic brought in new hobbyists that don't mind paying significant price increases.

You'll be waiting a long, long time if you expect to see $545 again.

On the other hand anything over $1,100.00 is definitely ridiculous.

MIKE,

It was at YORK this passed October, in the RED HALL.  That is where I met up with NORTON aka PETE, we were both looking at it and the price stopped us in our tracks.  Great price, we both agreed, but since we both already had the set passed on it.  There are bargains at YORK just take your time and look for them.
