I have a Lionel Pennsylvania RR GP9 with tmcc and sound. I do not have any way to test the command control functions as I run it with an old zw. Is it possible to have fried the board on the engine and it still run on conventional ac? It is a fantastic runner, the sound works great but someone tested it and said the board on the engine is fried.

Thanks in advance!

You didn't include an item number, but I'm guessing that your loco is one of the two TMCC Geeps from the late 1990's. There are two main boards in there -- LCRU2 and RailSounds 2.5.

The LCRU2 acts as the "brains" in both TMCC and conventional, and a failure of the radio portion of that board would allow it to work in conventional and not TMCC. Also, it's possible that the ElectroCouplers don't work, which is another conceivable failure that you wouldn't notice in conventional mode.

There might be more, but to answer your question, yes, that is a plausible failure scenario in that it can work fine in conventional but not TMCC.
