Recently getting back into the hobby, I purchased a couple of engines with TMCC and I’m anxious to use some of these features instead of conventional control.   With the availability of the Legacy #990 Command Set months away, a local dealer has both the TMCC and Legacy CAB1 command sets available.   The question is, which one to get?

I’ve searched and have read many of the discussions comparing these control systems but these discussions go back quite a few years.   Given my big concern is with software versions, a couple of years is quite a bit of time.   This is a temporary table top layout and a CAB2 will be in the future plans for the new layout in a year or two. But, for now I want the most hassle free way to enjoy TMCC.

The color of the box, the software version… So many different things to consider.   Would the TMCC or Legacy CAB1 command set be the best way to go to enjoy basic TMCC control?  If I am recalling correctly, it seems the Legacy CAB1 has some quirkiness to it depending on the software version so newer isn’t necessarily better. The TMCC command set might be easier to set up and maintain for my needs.

Questions ….    Is there a part number or a particular version number I should watch out for?   I have a ZW-L for power and I’m assuming that either of these command sets will work with the “base” connection on the transformer?

Everyone’s input is always appreciated. Let me know if I need to provide any additional information. Thank you!

2 follow up questions…

The set he has on the shelf is going to be a few years old. Will it require a software upgrade?

I was reading through the online owners manual and it described how to connect the command base to the track. I’m assuming I can connect it to the ZW-L and it will send out the signal to the tracks.

Thanks!

You cannot upgrade a Cab1L / Base 1L.
