One of my favorite engines is a SD40-2 Burlington Northern with Proto Sound.  I have considered upgrading this engine to PS2 or PS3 for a few years now as I really love running MU engines in command control.  However, I have not seen any top of cab flashing strobe lights on any new SD40-2's in the MTH line up including a Bicentennial BN.  I also remember reading some technical specification on PS3 and noticed this was not listed or missing in some way.  Does PS3 have this function and would it be available in upgrading from proto sound?  Any other options I could consider which would give me the DSC command  control yet keep all the original functions and sounds?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Here is a video showing the engine with the flashing strobe light. (not my video)  https://youtu.be/WteUGy25Ivk

Same engine in G scale either Aristocraft or USA trains has this...sits on display on powered track..i love the flashing.

I would think one of the many blinking 5mm or 3mm ebay leds available would work wired in to one of the light commands. Ahhhh...didn't see GRJ pin 11..even better but what would be the command under DCS?

FWIW, I have a 1991 Weaver SD40-2 that I upgraded to PS2 14 years ago.  Weaver had a top-of-cab flasher fed via track power & a CV board.  When I upgraded, I left it as is.  So it always flashes when the track is powered.  This has turned out to be an advantage, since when loco is shut down, I can tell that the track is powered.

But would you also need to use a chain file that has the lighting port turned on?

Only for PS-3 Diesel.  I used SF in a generic format.  If using PS-2 3V as he mentioned, it is sound file.  If you used a PS-32 board for diesel, it would only be SF as you would retain the PS-32 diesel flash code.  G

Thanks GunrunnerJohn, GGG, and all those that have commented.  There is a PS 2.0 sound file for the 20-2666-1 -20-2669-1 SD40-2 series on the MTH website.  So to confirm, I upgrade to PS 3.0 and the load this sound file, and viola' I have a command control DCS sd40-2 Burlington northern with the cab beacon functioning, engines sounds etc.  Of course the drawback is the freight sound will not match the engine number/road name, but I can live with that.

Thanks!

I didn't see any mention of him using PS2 3V board or the PS3/2 board. Just a question regarding the PS3 upgrade/ diesel board and the overhead beacon.

First sentence he said Upgrade PS-2 or 3. I have tried to covered all the basis. Yes if loading PS-3 diesel you should load chain file too.  G

MTH FYS are generic, no road name or number specifics.  There are a number of PS-3 SD40-2 also and the tunnel motor version also.  You can try them, I do not know if that feature is active.  You can ask MTH, or some one with one of those models needs to answer.  G
