With the recent addition of an American Eskimo puppy into our household, I have discovered that this type of dog has very fine hair that is ending up on my railroad and on my train wheels and gears.  Rather than create and try to enforce a strict protocol with separate clothes for the train room, it seemed more practical to enlist the help of a vacuum to run the tracks as the required first run of operation.  I created a MooSoo vacuum.

The 2025 version of MooSoo vacuum looks much closer to a tanker than a rocket - not as cool, but still functional.  MooSoo P05 Cordless Handheld Vacuum Cleaner at iMooSoo.com.  $36 + shipping.  I still need to adapt the nozzle, but as you can see I removed the log dump mechanism and Dremeled off the interfering plastic on a Lionel 9303 Log Dump car to nestle the vacuum.  (See a terrific earlier version of this car from @John Sethian in 2021).

I also cut off the leading coupler, anticipating a flared nozzle tucked close to the car frame to prevent interference around corners.

Very stable without tying it down, but there are two perfect notches for rubber bands already cut into the Log Dump car.  (Added photo with rubber bands.)

Mock up of hood - now I need to cut it a little longer and create a narrow tube to get the fastest air movement.  I might cut apart and reglue the nozzle that comes with the vacuum, but it may be fragile sticking out front.  The nozzle mock-up below is made from Woodland Scenics Track Bed ST1476, tie strap, and a couple of plastic screws repurposed from a Lionel girder bridge.  I’ll add a new photo once I have a tighter funnel in place under the cowl.

May I ask about the dimensions, (diameter and length) I'm wondering if this would work for S scale.  I did a search on John Sethian plus vacuum but didn't find anything.  this looks like a very good idea.

Thanks,

@Tom Stoltz the P05 vacuum is 60mm diameter (~2 3/8”) and 10 1/2” long.  There’s another smaller vacuum on the website too.

I advanced searched for ‘vacuum car’ (choose “both words must be included”) and John’s post was in the results.

Thanks, that worked, I found his posts and pictures.  He is using a different model that the P05.  I don't think they are available on Amazon anymore.  The P05 dimensions are good for S gauge... longer that a 40 ft freight car but shorter than 72 ft coach.  A SHS flat car is just right at 10".

That newer model Moo-Soo has an advantage over the one I used because it is shorter and thus eliminates the need for an idler flat car.  Although it is not as cool looking!  One thing to be aware of is where the exhausted air comes out.  I can’t tell from the pics.  You want to be sure it does not come out the sides, as you don’t want to blow off the scenery.  You probably don’t want it blowing out the back on ballasted track either

Despite the whimsical nature of this thing, it works very well, and I use mine regularly just prior to running my track cleaning car.  It is amazing what gets picked up!

Hi @John Sethian- the P05 exhausts straight out of the back end, and they even provide a nozzle and hose to use as a blower.

Was hoping to have my track trial today with my improved foam nozzle, but the wood glue isn’t dry yet on the rolled up foam.  Apparently gluing closed-cell foam takes a while to dry.

@Tom Stoltz - glad the new version will work for you!

Also, I was thinking I should store it off the layout in a metal box or away from combustibles since it contains a rechargeable battery.
