Just wanted to throw this out there:

I see by the Lionel parts website that all the wheel/axle sets for this engine are currently available; I wonder if the "flanged" #1 wheel/axle set might be a simple drop-in replacement for the #4 "flanged" wheel/axle with the traction tires. The engine itself weighs 4 1/2 pounds, so it seems like that would be plenty heavy enough to still be a good puller without those TTs.

Is anyone willing to guess on the "swap-ability" of these items?

A can motor and no rubber tires?  Wuut!?

Guess who else had this idea and already purchased an extra #1 axle...!    My recent-issue Legacy consolidation had other issues on arrival, including a broken plastic cage wheel for the tach sensor.  Rather than send it back I decided I would fix it myself and make it "better than new."  That ungrooved wheelset is still in the box waiting to be installed.  Been working on other projects, including layout designs all summer.

When I get the dining table cleared off and the itch to tinker again I'll post an update (unless you beat me to it!)  Great minds think alike!  Prototypical wheelspin at startup, here we come!!

Would be an easy swap as the wheelsets are held on with a bottom plate. Just be careful when you remove the wheelset in question as it may be sprung. Held upsidedown in a cradle you shouldn't loose any springs, just be aware they may be there and not under all axles. The Moguls only have springs under the rear wheelsets.

Did you ever get around to doing this swap?

There's probably little interest in this, but what the heck...

Turns out it this was super easy; just removing all the screws holding the bottom plate, the little "oiling holes" and the middle rail pick up shoes. Since the driver set in question was the #4 (closest to the cab) the only drive rod to mess with was the main rod. Being a 3-rail loco, there really was no "wrong" way to install the new set. Took maybe 15 minutes, and that's only because I was being extra cautious. I'll be gone for a while, so the true test won't be until later, but a very quick check shows everything is working as it should.

If it turns out I "need" the traction tire, I can always put the original set back on, but since the engine weighs plenty (as mentioned in my initial post), I think it'll be fine.

I also purchased a non-tired set for my Long Island (PRR) 2-8-0 (#6-38036) mentioned above. It's apparently "different" enough to have a different part number. I will be installing it sometime in the future...fingers crossed it goes as easy as the UP Consol did... good luck with yours.

I finally(!) got around to doing this the other day. Took about a half hour and...done! 😊
