I think this issue may have been brought up before but here goes; i’ve built the railsound box car kit, the trainsound tender kit all work well as they should. i’ve just purchased the lionel train sound tender 6-36788 it sounds great but does sound the whistle often randomly. the rollers have some wear nothing extensive the track is clean and there are some lighted cars on track with this. I think i’ve covered all the basis and suspect the main board is loosing its marbles. any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Usually caused by a bad electrical connection. I would double triple check your pickup rollers and ground straps. Clean and lube with CRC 2-26 (or similar) .
Here is a similar post involving unrequested sounds. It should apply here too.
thanks for the input. I did notice the roller springs are the plastic leaf type no longer available from lionel but some much better springs and rollers are available from Jeff the train tender i’ve bought parts from Jeff many times without any issues so i’ll probably swap out the rollers and springs with new insulators too. I think weak springs can be the problem too

If your repair abilities allow, that would be a great route to take.
replacing the rollers is easy done that before and the parts that Jeff has are good quality
hello all more follow up on the issue I have and looking for input. I have the tender train sound lionel # 6-36788 it has random sounding and checked the usual things that could cause it but no luck yet. there is a chip on the market # 691ICQT402 it is called “fix it” I wonder if this is compatible to board # 691ISNDGST not heard from lionel support yet
thanks for any input
Board 691ISNDGST is a Generic Steam Board which is what you should have. The 691ICQT402 is a fix it chip for Board 691ISND102 Conventional Classic Hudson. My guess is the new chip will give you Hudson Steam sounds. What's is worth to experiment and find out. The 691ISND102 board is available from Lionel for $35.00. The Generic Steam board is $45.00. The architect looks to be the same on both boards. Did you eliminate the pickup problem or are you looking to get the Hudson sounds? I am showing the collector assembly in stock. They are rather cheap looking with the plastic spring. Do both trucks have pickup rollers? Parts diagram is showing the front truck without one. Two pickups are way better than one.
thanks for that info. I have two good rollers on this unit. i’m not sure what the hudson sounds are but the unit I have is the same crew talk and sound of the polar express 6-36847 it is just the name change to lionel lines or at least it sounds identical is there a number for the hudson sound tender that I can get on youtube?
I'd hit the rollers with DeoxIt D5 and see if that solves the issue. The poor connections are usually the cause of these issues.
hey John, thanks for that input. the rollers did test ok on my work table good continuety roller to roller but that was not while in motion. i’ll clean these a little more and have some spares coming in the mail today those are easy to replace
problem solved on this lionel 6-36788 tender random sounding. as I thought it was not a power problem. I replaced the board with the same board as the polar express 6-36847 both have the same part number but the polar express version may have been “de bugged” since the production of the 6-36788
