I’m wondering if when sound and smoke cut out and come back on if it’s something to do with track being dirty. When I run my steam engine the sound and smoke cut out for short periods and then come back on. Any suggestions? Thanks!

An item# of the train would help.
Regardless, if you haven't cleaned. The track in awhile I would start there.
I'm not sute about smoke, but dirty track will make sound cut out if the tender loses power.
Make and actual product number are necessary to offer any useful help.
Here is the information on the engine.
Item # 30-1815-1 Great Northern (#2510) 4-8-2 Imperial M-1a Mountain Steam Engine w/Proto Sound 3.0
Thank you for any suggestions.
My guess, based on it being PS/3, is that you may have something like a bad smoke motor. If the smoke motor draws too much current, it will cause really odd things to happen. This is only one of the possibilities, but I've seen this one in person.
Good information to check out. Thank you for your quick response.

Does this also cause sound to cut in and out? Also do you know if the smoke motor parts are still available? Thanks!
Smoke parts are available. It's hard to know what it will cause, it drags down the 5V power supply, that's bad for all sorts of operations.
