I'm a complete rookie,  putting together a ceiling track layout, for my small print shop /office. I want to run one locomotive around a 12 x 24 single loop with 6-8 cars. There will  be a secondary track on one straight but that will be just for display. No switches. My train is a TMCC locomotive and 5 lit passenger cars (bought off the forum here). I will be adding some accessories like billboards (10 or so), maybe a couple of gates etc. I've read up on creating a bus etc.

I'm confused where to start for a transformer. Most descriptions for the transformers use words like "small" or "medium" layout. I'm not sure which category mine falls into. I don't really want to get into a full on TMCC or legacy set up, but I'd like to be able to turn the train on once in a while, when I am working, and use the whistle. I love the idea of using a vintage or vintage looking transformer. I'm really not sure where to start as far as size and model.

Thanks.

The size of the layout (which implies, how much track) isn't so much a factor as the actual electrical load. The electrical loads are the locomotive first, also lighted cars, switch lamps, accessories etc, if any. A larger transformer will be less prone to overheating if you have the layout running for extended periods of time. Newer transformers might have better protection with circuit breakers. Many newer locomotives have modest current draw. Your one train won't need a real big fancy transformer. You just might get overwhelmed with suggestions here ...
