I would just like to say congrats, ahead of the install. I bet it's going to be great!
I have no patience. Are they done yet????
Hi Trinkle,
This is a most excellent undertaking! I am very keen to see how it turns out. Don't be hatin' but here's what happened to your beautiful loco's livery in real life a bit later on:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6BZLiUMmHU
I still think it's pretty cool today, but I model a modern Ontario shortline that interchanges with CP and CN so I'm obviously a bit weird...
Pete
are you sure that's the right demo #? Seems like a newer model?

Correct. 70-73 were the tier II demonstrators. The 2100s were tier III demonstrators. And, of course, there are no tier IV demonstrators because EMD doesn't have any yet.
Oops my bad, sorry. In my defence, I'll claim I was so distraught that the wet noodle can just be slapped on top of these striking EMD demo liveries regardless of brand integrity, that I got the model wrong.

I'll put on on my flame suit and say I like the demo scheme with the CN noodle better than the stock red red/black.
I agree. Those demo liveries are very smart. CN has imho made the classic red and black liveries look look cheap and nasty by changing the subtle light grey of the noodle and lettering to stark white.
Sorry for the off topic posts.
Originally a Test Pair went through Moffat Tunnel on the Moffat Line and worked in captured service over the Joint Line to and from the AAR Test Center east of Pueblo, CO. : )
Part 3 of Alex's Video is in works (I'll call him about the update) ...Alex is hashing out standards...getting parts...building custom speaker boxes.
As Erik talks about below, the test car was available through a GGD Congressional set.
I'd love to get one if anyone knows of one just lying around. : )
You could easily plate the windows and match the silver finish or improve on it with Alclad paints.
From GGD's website.
The trouble is these sets are rapidly becoming collectors items far beyond the K-Line cars.. These aluminum and brass cars will undoubtedly command brass prices I suspect. Breaking a set will be an expensive endeavor; however I'm sure some PRR fans will want extra cars from one.
Like Rick asked does anyone have a lead in a congressional set?

No I haven't heard a thing from Alex at DCCTRAIN of Cincinnati Ohio.
It has been since Dec 2014 (now June 2015 =7 months! ) and no successful install yet. I was giving him time and/or waiting for the 1st OGR forum person to ask; it's you! I will do a follow-up with him and see where he is on the next video - which needs to be installation!
Thanks Erik!
Send them to me and I'll install command tomorrow! (DCS)
I'll have to test them for a few months though.......
An alternate -- and perhaps ( ahem ) better solution would be a Sunset [ eg, "real" Sunset ] version of the same car, preferably still unassembled, unlettered, etc.; I think it would be more economical to find this car than breaking up a GGD set.
But that's just an opinion.
SZ
Edited to add: I also think it would make a better model -- but again that's a personal opinion.

Very true.
I forgot about those.
Thank you Steinzeit!
Great idea!
Rick
Joe, you'd do a marvelous job of putting DCS in! (and test running for months not a problem! )
I was contacted by Alex of DCCTRAIN, and he has been working the entire O Scale DCC shift from his HO Scale DCC standards to include proper LEDs for O Scale. Producing these newer O Scale standards is part of why I sent them to Alex. My timing allows for experimentation and we are doing it. Looks like we got the LEDs worked out for ditch lights. Will let you know more as I learn it and as Alex puts the trons on the internet!
I understand the project has moved from R&D into production and that is very, very good!

Pete M,
Do you model ONR by chance?
I'm looking for another Overland ONR SD70I to work with like I'm doing below.
A developing project to be covered on OGR....
Please let me know! : )
Thanks,
Rick

You are truly, a patient man!!
I'm dying to see these puppies run!
I will beg as much as needed to get to see them run!

Hi Rick, I'm sorry but I don't model ONR. I wish I could - those SD70Is are some of my favourite locos. But budget and space constraints mean I have to settle for 4-axle power, loosely based on OSR and GEXR that I see working around here.
I did get a short cab ride in #2100 after a ride up to North Bay on the Northlander behind ONR's F Units about 14 years ago, but that's as close as I got. Might still have a few pics from that day if of interest. LMK and I'll see what I can find.
Keep up the good work! I am keen to see how these SD70Is turn out. Also your approach to modern above-deck mounted ditch lights which continue to be a challenge for me with the standard LED sizes I can find online.
Pete
There is a new video out on the Trinkle-Trains OMI SD70ACe ESU LokSound DCC installation project. This video shows the new Plastruct built boxes and their logical positioning within the SD70ACe long hood. (The video also advertises another unrelated sound system and not the sound of the SD70ACe - that is not yet operational as you'll see the components are not yet connected.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6lD8bNyE0o
Alex of DCCTrain says the final video will show stills of the installation and operational running of these 2 first test engines.
We look forward to seeing it in the near future Alex!! Thanks!

Sweeeeet!
Looking great!
Rick,
Great looking GM73, simply fantastic!
PCRR/Dave
The 1st EMD DEMO SD70ACe GM73 had its rollout at the DCCTRAIN Cincinnati shops last week:
All functionalities in sound and lights checked out just fine.
Special thanks to Alex of DCCTRAIN for his custom speaker boxes, light lenses and for videotaping the entire process. The final video of the rollout can be found here:
The second EMD Demo SD70ACe unit GM70 also awaits its roll through a similar checkout and functionality test soon; just before it too ships to our Colorado Springs "Denver Industrial District" layout for operational use.
Now to replicate these installs fleet-wide - NO easy task I hear! ; ) .

Rick,
Extremely nice!
Enjoyed part 4 of the video series!
Congrats!!!
You have quite a beautiful engine there. I'm getting really jealous!
So nice to see high end stuff get DCC'd! Beautiful!
Beautiful engine Rick, I have the MTH 3 rail premier version. The fixed pilots and scale couplers on the one you pictured here makes it look like a beast.
Mark
Very nice locos. I always liked this demo scheme on the 70aces!
I enjoyed watchiing and discussing with Alex the progress with the Demos. Alex had put a lot of thought into the process of the install and did a 1st class act with the locomotives.
He is very particular in his work. I hate to see the locos leave the shop.
Stephen
You and me both! I'm talking with Alex too, he will upload the sounds to a couple of ESU Loksound L decoders soon. He's the man!

Guys,
We're now waiting on EMD Demo SD70ACe unit GM70. No word as to status from DCCTrain yet. I guess when they're both ready he'll ship them. The trick in shipping brass diesel locos is to pack foam support behind the walkway handrails and stanchions, and most importantly - pack foam behind the front and rear pilots! I'll be sure to tell Alex before he ships. Hate to see all of Alex's work and my nice engines end up the way a recent AT+SF CF-7 arrived here at Trinkle-Trains (see pictures below):
This CF-7 was going to be some prime COSM LTN Shortline head end power for the December show this Christmas season. It was to get super detailing and new windows; but now its a well-handled return and a good idea laid to rest. I'll catch the next PRB narrow window CF-7 in factory paint...yeah...I know, not that numerous. : I
