This is the photo. Seems like a pretty bad mishap to me, but it could be the lighting.

Yes that's the photo but with no real first hand account attached to it.  I'm not defending but until someone actually lays eyes on it I'll hold judgement.  It doesn't take much adjustment of the photo to make it look Tuscan so lets just see if anyone can verify.  I liked this scheme so I have to root for it being correct but I also won't hold my breath.

The S1 Was NEVER painted anything other than DGLE (Dark Green Locomotive Enamel).     So this is obviously not a model.    Therefore what ever color or colors it is painted by Lionel are perfectly accurate.

I disagree. When you catalog it as "Tuscan Red" it should match any true prototype in color.  So whatever color Lionel paints it is NOT accurate unless it's Tuscan Red.

Except, 1) there were many, MANY different "shades" of PRR "Tuscan Red", depending on the paint batch and the age, i.e. fading, on the piece of rolling stock. 2) The PRR S1 locomotives were NEVER painted "Tuscan Red", so no matter whatever color Lionel delivers, it will NOT be prototypically correct.

Yes we all know the S-1 in Tuscan Red, is not prototypical nobody said it was but Tuscan Red color is prototypical of the way some true prototypical engines, rolling stock etc were painted.    While it maybe many shades based on fading and all the other variables, there is pretty much an expected shade of red we have become accustomed from the manufacturers as Tuscan Red.  While I don't expect them to all match perfectly they should all come close.

I would expect the same for the non prototypical S-1 in Tuscan Red to also come close to what has previously been released.

When I first saw the videos of the latest Tuscan Sharks at first I thought “Oh crap they Fed up The Tuscan again” but later in the video the Tuscan looked like it should ie darker and not red. This tends to make me think that lighting really effects the Tuscan when photographed or videoed.

Like Marty said let’s see the live version or a video of the engine which is better to judge the shade of Tuscan. The one thing I can say is the engine photographed in Steven’s post does have a sharp look to it. Although I am not a big fan of fantasy paint schemes this one could grow on me. Like to see it with the passenger cars.

For what it's worth, the stipe along the side looks pretty close to a tuscan red match, but it's still a fantasy paint scheme.Lionel Tuscan PRR S1Tuscan Red GG1

Well the engine is touted as matching the PRR Fleet of Modernism cars.  They seem More Tuscan with a burgundy band.  I guess we'll have to wait and see what is delivered.  I really don't have a fight in this game since I didn't order one but I am really rooting for this one because if I were to pre-order one it probably would have been this one.

I have the Lionel 11319 which is a "red" K4 according to the box. Clearly it is some shade of Tuscan. IMO, its really sort of sad that Lionel can't accurately describe colors or gloss. I simply won't pre-order. If I like it and its still available after I see it, fine. If I like it and its not available, I'm unhappy. But I'm nowhere near as unhappy as I would be if I bought it and didn't like it. So what do you think the red will be like on the Lionel NYC Mohawk boxcar engine? Bright and glossy like the Texas Special F3 set of the late 1990's? Or dull and flat like the Texas Special E8 set of 2007?

This thread triggers a few thoughts:

  • In this day and age and with the available technology, color matching (at least some semblance of "close") should not be an issue.  That it remains a problem is down to pure sloppiness, IMO.
  • I am not and never been a fan of fantasy paint schemes.
  • For those of you who ordered this engine, my sincere wish is that it meets your expectations and that you enjoy it.

George I agree with the above.  Some fantasy schemes though really strike my fancy.  This one had me curious because it was a very possible paint scheme IMO that could have been real.

I was really close to preordering this one but if the picture is correct, I’m glad I didn’t. I decided I’d hold off to see how they came out before ordering. Was hoping for a more traditional Tuscan.

Right or wrong, it does match the passenger set. I hope those that got it thoroughly enjoy. The sounds and details are fantastic, no debating that.
