TVS Diodes on Track & ZW's | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum

Hi Everybody-- As I start my wiring project, I'll be installing some of the 60 TVS diodes I bought from Mouser...

I plan on installing one across each output of my two ZW's and my KW. Also plan to install one across each track block that is controlled by a toggle switch. Does this sound OK ? Also, the diode can be installed either direction in this case, correct ?

And don't worry-- I remember about "phasing" transformers !! Infact, I'll have a couple of small stand-alone transformers for misc lighting and so forth... They can be "phased" as well !

If you got the bi-directional one that is usually recommended here (1.5KE36CA) you will be fine with it installed either way.

GRJ's seal of approval on the rest is a good thing to have.

I am not familiar with electronics so my question is the TVS placed between the common and power terminals on the transformer?

Correct, install it like you were trying to short out the power. Of course, it won't, but that's how it's used.

It may be overkill but I'd put a TVS on each track block, whether controlled by a toggle switch or not. See diagram below on how I would do it.

Correct. The TVS is placed between the common (black) and hot (red) terminals.
