At $25 a pop, not sure that is going to happen! Is there a schematic anywhere. I thought I saw 9 volt battery cases for sale on the web a while ago. They should be cheaper to make then to buy, shouldn't they?

Just heat shrink the caps.
I did not have time to search, but I think GunrunnerJohn or Dale M. posted a year or two ago a "how to" on making your own capacitor for MTH battery or BCR replacement. I thought they said the unit cost was between $5 and $10 each which depends on quantity and where you buy your supplies.
I built both 9V & 3V BCR's per John's plans- they work great!! If you can't find his post let me know and I'll dig it out for you.
Do a search "Susan deats bcr"...that might help
I think Pat of Pat's trains put a plan out too. A forum search should turn up what you need.
Thanks!

Susan Deats website downloaded my 9V and 3V supercap replacement plans. OGR deleted them from the forum since one of their sponsor whined about it.
I have the plans if you cannot find them. Just pm me.
Here's the link to rrman's How To:

3V cells are a piece of cake, there is an available 5V superCAP so you don't need to do anything but solder leads onto it.

John,
Boy even simpler yet!! And I love K.I.S.S.!
I checked the supercap willygee referenced. It is what I use to replace 2.4 volt batteries in all my PS2 locos. However, I would not use it in a 5-volt loco to replace the 8.4 volt battery, because the charging circuit, designed to charge an 8.4-volt battery, will apply substantially more than the 5-volt rating.
Correct RJR, note that I recommended it for 3V systems. You could use two of these with 4.7V Zener diodes in place of four of the 2.7V caps.
I was afraid your reference to its 5-volt limit could be construed by someone as meaning it can be used in the 5-volt (8.4 volt battery system).
My bad...i should have clarified 3volt PS2 boards with the original twin AA rechargeable pack but i was commenting off from GRG reply
Can someone please provide the complete spec for the 4.7V zenner diode? Thanks
Are you trying to build a 3 volt or 9 volt?

Trainmstr, The 9V cell assembly is shown on the bottom half of this page, Battery Substitutes for MTH Engines .
From that parts list: The mouser.com part # is 78-1N5223B. The Vishay part # is 1N5223B-TR.
(Zener Diodes 2.7 V 0.5W 5%) The Datasheet for 1N5221 to 1N5267 shows specs.
