My wife and I drove out toward Claude and found a place to do a roll-by.  We skipped downtown Amarillo, as it was going to be a large crowd and not much to see.  Instead, we went up to Boys Ranch for another roll-by.  Even with the light train and the anniversary trinkets adorning the 844, it was a pleasant sight.

Did you go down to the FW&D depot to see the servicing?

Hi Tom,

My dad and I waited just west of Claude to pick up the train.  We had a great stationary view of her coming out of Claude to the first crossing (where we were, just west of the end of the construction), then we paced her all the way into Amarillo.  We stopped pacing her when she stopped in East Austin to throw a switch.

I was driving while dad took movies.  We had a prime spot just behind the engine pretty much the whole way in.  The best part was when she slowed from 50 down to around 20 when passing a BNSF freight and then sped up. You could really hear her chuffing as she accelerated.

All in all, it was a great 70th B-day Present for my dad who had never seen a mainline Steam Engine in action.
