Just picked up my UP Rocket Train Set, needed help to get it to the car! That's the biggest train box I remember ever getting!
First inspection was good, the only cosmetic flaw I found was one of the tiny chains had pulled out of one side of the booster covers. A tiny spot of glue and it was all good. Sadly, the couplers on these cars haven't improved over the previous issues with couplers that have been widely discussed. It's hit or miss that two cars on a straight track with the couplers open will properly coupler when the meet. In a number of cases, one coupler won't close far enough to latch unless you apply a finger to help.
First run was "interesting". On the first trip around the layout the clearance car found a spot that passed all the other clearance tests, Centipedes, Vision Line Big Boy, 21" passenger cars, etc. So, I have to fix that before it'll make a full trip around the mainline! Obviously, the clearance car is really needed for those wide rocket booster containers!
The one running issue I see is a classic railroad issue, the heavy passenger car at the rear of the train tends to pull the light boxcar in front of it off the rails. That appears to be a combination of the lightweight boxcar (I'm going to fix that), and the fact that Lionel opted for fixed couplers on the trucks of these cars. To save ten cents they went with a rigid truck and coupler design that is more prone to derailing than the better design with the coupler being able to articulate on the truck. I'm hoping that adding weight to the boxcars will solve the issue with the boxcar derailing, I really don't want to have to swap out all the trucks!
In spite of those minor warts, it is an impressive set, and I can't wait to address those so it can be put into revenue service!
