Using old transformer concerns

If the insulation on the line cords is crumbling, replace them.  That's about all you need to do.

They were made for postwar trains.  Examine the line cord for any cracks or breaks before you plug them in.  There isn’t much maintenance required besides dusting them off.  If you need a new line cord, most hardware stores have the cord and plug already assembled.

Thanks guys.  Line cords are in good shape.  They may have been previously replaced.

Be aware that Marx motors need to have the voltage topped out about 13 V.  You can hook the 1033 up to make sure you don't exceed that figure by much; I don't know what the numbers are for the Flyer unit.

I ordered ten replacement cords from the Train Tender. The nice thing about these cords is that the plugs are the same size, i.e., they are not polarized so it makes it easy if you want to phase them with other transformers.  It was $2.85 for the bulk price or $4.00 each for less than ten.  Whenever possible, I always buy in bulk.  The cords are tined on the end which makes it easy to solder in. 

I would at least visually check out the internal wiring, including the core.  Also, if a transformer uses rollers to make contact with the secondary, I'd check the rollers so its bracket doesn't cut into the wire on the coil.
