reading my DCS instructions, how do I wire the TIU to a track so I can operate Proto 2 enginges and Proto 1 Engines on the same track- obviously not both at the same time.??

Actually, you can run both Command (PS2 & PS3) and conventional (PS1) engines on the same track, at the same time, although it does take some manual dexterity.
To wire so as to be able to operate both command and conventional, do as follows:
- Connect a transformer output to Fixed #1 IN, transformer Hot to the Red post and transformer Common to the Black post
- Jumper from Fixed IN #1 to Variable #1 IN, Red post to Red post and Black to Black
- Connect Variable #1 OUT to the tracks, Red post to center rail and Black post to an outside rail.
Then, press TR on the remote, select TIU Track #1 in the LED window and press the thumbwheel. Now, scroll up voltage on the track using the thumbwheel.
Use the TR screen to control the PS1 engine and the ENG screen to control your PS2 engine.
For detailed information regarding conventional control of trains under DCS, refer to Part VII - Operating Conventional Engines in The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition.
This and a whole lot more is all in "The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition", now available for purchase as an eBook or a printed book from MTH's web store site! Click on the link below to go to MTH's web page for the book!

WOW! Thank you very much. I didn't understand any of this from the instruction manual. Is braided wire, or solid core wire better? Does it matter?

Yes, it makes a difference since the DCS signal travels on the outside of the wire. That's why stranded wire is a much better choice.
That's also in the book.
