Can anyone give me some insight on the 2 steam locomotives? If you can only buy one which would you buy? The VL class A is basically a Legacy engine placed in a black box. It has no significant features and the Lionel exclusive train of the year is a numbered 2-10-4 in the Lionel lines paint scheme. They are both the same cost and I like them both. Can anyone help me make a decision?

I don’t have any intention of buying either one. However, if i were allowed to have one, I would want the Class A. It was a real locomotive, that wore that paint scheme, on that specific road. The “Locomotive of the Year” is a fantasy scheme with the wrong tender.
That’s JMHO, and nothing else.

I agree with you that the class a has no special features. If I were you I’d grab a veranda. It’s more of a vision line than the class a in my opinion.
To each their own, but since I don't care much for fantasy schemes, this would be an easy decision for me.
