After reviewing the Menards ad insert in OGR Run 319 I thought a store visit would be in order.  Our closest Menards is in Watertown, SD, about 45 minutes away and we were needing home renovation supplies anyway.   I asked a young clerk about toy trains and he said "nope", "only toys we have are up by check-out."  Undaunted, I asked a gray haired IMG_1991IMG_1992clerk further back into the store, "oh yeah" she replied, "they're upstairs in the mezzanine at this time of the year."    I did not find the weathered Purolator oil tank car I sought but it was still cool to look over their inventory, and of course a return visit will be necessary !

Unless it's within 6 or 8 weeks of Christmas I just head directly to the mezzanine.

While you won't find everything when you're there off-season I usually have an "Aha!" moment for at least one item every time I go.  (It does help however that where I'm at we have 5 Menards within short driving distance, particularly if you're looking for something really special.)

Menards’ larger modern stores have room in the seasonal department to keep the train stock nearby. My store puts the leftover stock along the department’s back wall (which is actually the front wall of the store).

However, you are apparently unaware of the many threads that have discussed Menards’ train supply in stores. The company does not ship new train stuff to the stores year-round. That happens by early October each year, when the seasonal department is set up for toys intended for Christmas sales. Anything you find after Christmas and eight-plus months later is merely stock that didn’t sell.

Most of Menards train sales are online — probably like 90 percent of them. In fact, many products never make it to the shelves, either because they sold out before the seasonal department setup period or because they are deemed not of broad interest.

So when you see a new product announcement here on the forum between January and August, don’t go running to a Menards store expecting to find it there right away. Order online. You have the option of free delivery if you ship it to a store for pickup.
