Up to this point I have strictly been Lionel, with no MTH.  I have the lionel Legacy system, however I have reached the fork in the road, and want to add a DCS system to run MTH engines/products.  Cool stuff!!   With out breaking the bank, here is a list of questions if someone could help.  Thanks in advance.

  • What is the latest out there in DCS/TIU?
  • I currently have a Lionel ZW, 2-Lionel 180Watt Powerhouses, a CW 80.. TPC 400, and Lockons.  Will this incorporate with the DCS system or do I need to purchase adapter cables, etc?
  • I understand that I can operate TMCC and Legacy (to some degree) engines.  Are both able to run on the same track, at the same time?
  • Any other advise to get into MTH would be greatly appreciated.

USCGRET,

Looking at this correctly you don't just add the DCS, you must run the DCS

complete set up and add the TMCC/Legacy to it with the correct wiring.

I always recommend the OGR DCS Video guide and Barry's DCS O Gauge Companion

2nd addition for acquiring the education needed to set up the complete DCS/TMCC/Legacy running package.  Watch the video, Rich Melvin does a great visual job of explaining how the MTH DCS and the Lionel TMCC/Legacy are blended together to set up the package, use Barry's DCS O Gauge Companion track side as you build your layout, you will needed to rereference as you set up.

Then come back here and ask as many questions as required.  The OGR forum has a lot of knowledgeable DCS runners that can answer all your questions.

Dave,

Rich Melvin does a great visual job of explaining how the MTH DCS and the Lionel TMCC/Legacy are blended together to set up the package,

Actually, I don't believe that's correct. As I recall, Legacy hadn't yet been invented so the OGR video doesn't mention it at all.

However, The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition discusses which MTH cables work to connect the TIU to the TMCC command base and connect the TIU to the Legacy command base (they aren't the same cables), and how to have both TMCC and Legacy connected to the DCS TIU either separately or at the same time. The discussion includes wiring diagrams for all possible command base configurations.

This and a whole lot more is all in "The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition", now available for purchase as an eBook or a printed book from MTH's web store site! Click on the link below to go to MTH's web page for the book!

I was interested in how these two worked together as well and came across a youtube video from Eric Seigal with ericstrains.com and he visually shows how his system is setup using MTH dcs Tiu and the tmcc brick linked together to allow him to control both systems. He has the works and so its pretty advanced for me but I am attempting research and hope to one day get my setup somewhat like that so I can get at least most if not all of the features out of each brand.
