In the years before I retired, I acquired a fair number of Lionel, MTH, and Weaver locomotives as well as both the Legacy and DCS systems. I salted everything away with the intention of using them on my "someday" layout. Well, that someday was Wednesday. I have the layout wired and, to see if the wiring was good and the control systems worked, I pulled out an engine and fired it up ... sort of. Rather than make a short story long, suffice it to say that everything worked except the engine. I had lights. I had the whistle. I had no movement. Even though it had never been run, the engine was DOA and, because it'd been over 4 years since I'd purchased it, it was no longer under warranty. I sent it back to the manufacturer today. I don't know how much it will cost to repair, but the lesson I learned from this is to test run every engine on a simple loop of track and not wait until "someday".

I have a Lionel, Milwaukee Road S3 that's NIB and I have to ask myself, do I feel lucky; well, do I? (Nod and a wink to Dirty Harry)

Its to bad about the engine, but I am glad you have your layout up and running.  How did the others run. Remember If some of the MTH engines are PS1, I would recommend changing out the batteries with a BCR. The rest of the MTH, I would charge the batteries first. Inspect batteries in the 5v PS2. If it has the white battery replace it with the green MTH battery. It would be a good idea the replace the 9v batteries in the Lionel engines too.

You didn't say what manufacture the engine was. MTH will have batteries if it is PS1 or PS2. Sitting in a box means they will need to be charged first including replacing the white battery mentioned above.

Rule of thumb is to test all engines you purchase. Also test all operating accessories you purchase. I just had this happen on 2 MTH signals I purchased a few years ago. tested one to see how it operated. The other was dead when tested during the summer to put on the layout. I was able to partially fix this one but it was a discontinued model. It took some time but found another one to replace it.
