I have purchased "unmarked" rolling stock and engines. I then use decals to make them for Texas and Pacific. Most of my rolling stock is modeled after 1940 type equipment.

I use pictures that I down load from the net as my prototype. I have mastered painting the cars and have done well with the lettering, but the logo for the railroad has been problematic. I have had some success with making my own decals but had failures too.

IMHO there is a market for decals of non-popular road names, the big five road names are well served except for obscure variants but finding logos for something like the Ft. Worth & Denver is difficult.

Everybody seems to have trouble with the small data and safety decals of all lines.

I think. I also think that the dimensional data was from another set.

Or maybe ProtoCraft:

Malcolm reminded me that ProtoCraft makes them, not sure if they got them from Champ, but I doubt it (I think Champ said all or nothing to inquiries).

I'll soon have Dave/LBR working on decals for the GN Empire Builder.

After that, I'm going to get him working on some Christmas-themed decals for a custom Christmas train--who needs LIONEL, MTH, etc. when you can create your own train--rolling stock is abundant; O scale decals are not.

Also, for those of us, me included, who have bemoaned/whined about the lack of O scale decals to model what we want, that excuse is gone.

Dave:  I've been looking for C&NW decals for a while.  What I need are two sets of caboose decals for steel cabeese.  Problem is that all manufacturers painted their C&NW cabooses in yellow and green, and while those are very nice colors, the RR didn't use that scheme until after 1975.  Before that they were all caboose red with white block lettering and the standard "Northwestern" logo.  Nothing on my layout represents anything after 1950, so I'm about 25 years apart.

If $9.98 per set was the price, I'd be happy to pay that for good, water decals.  The sticky back decals are just too thick and show up as decals even after applying a clear coat over them.

Milwaukee Road decals would also be attractive to me, although I don't have any Milwaukee Road projects going at this very minute.

EDIT:  My original post here has been deleted because a member later commented that what I said was name-calling.  That was not my intention.  My point was to say it will be interesting to see how many members who are expressing interest in this thread in having decals made will actually follow through to supply Dave/LBR with what's needed to make the desired decals.

Russell,

We plan on doing a lot of the D&RG, D&RGW, etc.  ;o)

That's GREAT!....since I have currently running (about a week old) a WTB on that forum for a decal set to do this...

drgw boxcar

...that is, DRGW 40' Boxcar in white lettering.

Now, what this request is REALLY about...as stated in my WTB appeal...is a set that closely complements the old Ambroid O-7 kit, DRGW 40' Vertical Ribbed Boxcar.  The original kit decal sheet is creased and may not survive the water bath intact.

So my other question would be re artwork quality for a custom decal...  If you only had the kit instruction sheet that showed all of the lettering in the correct size/font for sides, doors, ends in their final placement (exact scale drawing), could you create a composite sheet from this information?  The instruction sheet is, of course, black lettering.  The final decals would necessarily be white...as applied to a Boxcar Red car body.

Either way, it would sure help me!

Nonetheless....glad to have another decal producer available!!

It will improve your chances if you spray clear coat on the decal sheet before putting it in the water. It still might not survive, but the odds are better. Of course, a new decal sheet is even better - just thought I'd throw in the suggestion.

I like the Christmas themed decal idea too! I would especially be interested in just some plain white lettering to make a Christmas themed tender. I recently repainted a Marx Commodore Vanderbilt, and a matching tender would be sweet!

Perhaps:

Christmas Express

Santa's Express

Holiday Express

North Pole Limited

Since mine would be going on a Marx 6" car, making the decal no more than 3 or 4" long would be great. Adding a 1225 or just 25 under the name might be a neat touch as well.

Other  Christmas decals that may be interesting:

Naughty

Nice

North Pole Express Mail

That's all I can think of at the moment,

COOL! (pun intended)

What I like about your approach to the decals in O gauge is to print them on an ALP as needed. Just keep the data and print what someone orders as many times as needed. In the old days you needed to keep stock in inventory just in case someone

wanted an obscure road or car type.

Thanks for giving us this option.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I've already coated it with Microscale's Decal Film, for the same purpose.  When I applied it (to the film side, of course) you could see the backing paper become moist (darken) in spots along the crease.  That said to me that the freshly applied film had penetrated the original decal film, and now I probably had a permanently-bonded decal/backing at those spots.  Since the crease is also the weak area of the decal, trying to 'force' the backing paper off at those spots when I soak it in water, will probably cause the original decal film to shatter into a bazillion fragments.  Just a guess at this point, but I'd rather have a reserve decal set of some sort before taking the dive.

I second the request for anything Alaska RR.  Before ARR engines and rolling stock became so readily available I was able to make some of the available HO scale decals work on flats and maybe gondolas.  I also have trouble seeing the smaller detailed white decals on white and sometimes even the blue paper.  So could you include a paper print showing the decal layout on the decal paper?

OK all of you ARR fans here it is  ;o)

We have just listed our first everALASKA rolling stock decal set. This is for a caboose featuring theMcKinley Park Route herald.

This beautiful set of decals comes in white for $7.25 USD (for colored cars) or in black for $5.50 USD (for white, silver or off white cars).

Please take a look even if you are not an ARR fan at our web site at:

Thank you all for your continuing support and great recommendations.

Dave, I just sent you an email so we can continue our discussion off-line.

Thanks!
