It's time for WEEKEND PHOTO FUN!!!

Last week I went to the C&O Heritage Center in Clifton Forge. They had a donation of a train layout that they want to restore this Spring. They requested that the Roanoke Valley Model Railroad Club members try to get the layout up and running.

This was a reproduction of one of Lionel's dealer layouts.

Inside the station they have a long O-Gauge layout with some of the nicest custom buildings you will see anywhere.

Great looking buildings Scott. Will look forward to seeing the Lionel dealer layout completed, looks like a fun project.

Been working on custom painting a couple of MTH engines. The C630 was a C&O and SD 40-2 a Soo line before painting. Lots of work with masking for the 3 colors and some custom decals. Lots of thin coats of paint with the airbrush. Shown with the old British Columbia Railway paint scheme behind, the SD 40-2 green a past MTH release and C630 in green I custom painted a few years back. The bottom photo shows the upper line with the Pacific Great Eastern paint scheme that preceded British Columbia Railway. 1918 to 1972 PGE, British Columbia Railway 1972 to 1984 then BC Rail till 2004 when leased to CN Rail.

Looking forward to seeing everyone's great photos!

Haven't posted on here for a few weeks since I was working feverishly to finish Jacks Narrow which I finally did this past weekend, so here ya go...

So first, here's a shot similar to one I posted a few weeks ago showing a train passing over a classic PRR stone arch bridge in the distance, but now the river banks have been completed and the epoxy which simulates water has been poured:

IMG_7919

Now that all looks like one scene, but in truth it really isn't. In fact, the bridge is across an aisleway and in the distance. See for yourself...

IMG_7944

I never anticipated taking such a shot when I designed the layout, but it is one of the best photo opportunities on the layout.

Now here is a shot of how I hinged the corner section to allow access to the scenery that is more than 30 inches from the fascia:

IMG_7941IMG_7942

And here's the piano hinge that makes it all possible:

IMG_7943

Now here is a view of the crazy fascia work needed on this part of the layout:

This shows you US Route 22 behind that piece of fascia sticking up and blocking a direct view into the narrows and why I built it that way (to include the rock cut and rock slide fence):

Now here are some more picturesque views of the scenery in the Narrows including one with US Route 22 in the foreground. My son Steven had the W beam guardrail 3D printed:

And finally here are some aerial views of both the model and prototype:

Now that was a long post, but I hope that you enjoyed it!

Scott, thanks for starting this thread every week.  I like that lookout tower.  Was that made with leftover pieces from some of the skyscrapers?

The bell tower was made from a left over steeple from the two church lanterns I bought from Lowes back in 2019.

Ever since I made the church I held onto the extra piece and wanted to make a bell tower out of it in the other room.
This scene is on the second level in my first room of the layout (figure 8). I purchased a small piece of Clover Leaf decorative sheet metal from Menards (Menards decorative sheet metal is less expensive than Lowes). I cut and folded the metal around the leftover steeple from the other church and used JB Weld to connect the sides. I had already paint matched the chapel to my polar express cars. So I used the same colors for the Bell Tower.

I added a bell to the tower and a string of lights.

Neal,

Great modeling and wonderful photography.  I am really impressed by the depth of field and the lighting with shadows, etc.  Thanks for sharing.  NH Joe

Neal,

Incredible workmanship and planning!  This is a great layout.

What are the overall dimensions and do you have a track plan you can share?

Terrific photos and videos this weekend.  It just keeps getting better and better.  Scott, thanks so much for doing this each week, I look forward to it each Friday but don't always get to see it until Saturday or Sunday.  This weekend was not exception but it was definitely worth the wait to get to check it out.  Have a great weekend guys, I'm starting on my display shelves, hope to have the first wall done before the weekend is done.  No Super Bowl for me, work to be done but then that might change depending on what the boss says.

I am very pleased with Mr. Muffins custom run Lionel B&O USRA Pacific. I have just put away the Christmas trains and now have a chance to run it with a passenger set. Very pleased. I like the paint job on the pilot, at first I thought it was a mistake, really neat, and a great paint job on the whole loco. The Vanderbilt tender made this a must have for me, you don’t see that much on B&O model steamers. Finally, I shot a video to show this engine in action…

Neal, your scenery is fantastic as always! Do you have anymore pictures of your rolling stock carts? I’m looking to do something similar

Eric,

I'm glad that you like the scenery. I've hesitated to post pictures of the rolling stock carts since it would be impossible to post all the construction details here. I keep telling myself to write up an article about it. I'll try to post some photos in Weekend Photo Fun at some point. I started building them since I like to rotate my rolling stock and it was just impossible if I tried to put everything back in the box. It usually takes a weekend to build one, and my son and I do it out on the driveway in the summer so we can actually do model railroading outdoors.

Better late than never I suppose. The RC3R had a run session this weekend so I got to finally test out my new (to me at least) 1997/8 Hudson with TMCC in command mode and confirmed my "pocket sized" Big Boy excursion train can run on our smaller 12x15 layout. Everything checked out aside from the Hudson's sounds cutting out in conventional mode on occasion, but it works fine in tmcc mode so I'm not sure what to think

Neal - magnificent!!!

Everyone - this is why you need to attend our division's Model Railroad Jamboree on April 23.  Neal's layout will be open for visiting on April 24th.  And you really need to see the rest of this nationally recognized model railroad.
