WEEKEND PHOTO FUN start early. Since most of us are at home due to the winter storm.

Last week I acquired the Lionel Standard Gauge Commodore Vanderbilt passenger cars prototypes. Now I have to decide what to do with them.

Well, I am back at school to finish up my last semester of college. Since I have no layout in my small apartment, I have to figure out other ways to satisfy my need to do something model trains so I ordered a 4 pack of these MTH Railking Tuscan LIRR passenger cars in anticipation of the new Lionel Camelback. I got a steal on these from T&K Hobbies, less than half of what the MSRP is. I ordered 100 of the cheap Chinese sitting figures and, after some amputations, my girlfriend and I installed them in the three passenger cars with seats. Be on the lookout for a video on them on my YouTube Channel soon!

Well "Peter" made me do it.  That is buy this brut of a small steam engine.  Was drawn to the fact that it is a one piece steam engine but brutish.

This is just a quick snap right out of the box to check for any external problems like Peter (another) forum) member had.

Now will have to make sure all "screws" are tight which means have to get the metric Allen wrenches from the top righthand drawer of the tool cabinet base, plus other hobby tools out.  Then lube it for testing on the JR test stand.  Figures crossed.  Hopefully all is well so do not have to make the 30-mile south to Concord.

My primary consist will be the Lionel NYC milk car that look a lot like the NYC "milk can cars"  of their large fleet of in the 30's.  Add a couple of NYC heavy weight passenger car originally bought for the P&LE "Steel King" commuter train.  Then add one two P.T. Barnum business cars to the tail.  Another option that would be neat looking the 16 billboard refers since still prototypical legal till 1938.

A 2020 Christmas Layout memory

Staying another week with the back middle area.

OVERVIEW (shown before)

z - back middle

The 'food' area:  I'm somewhat embarrassed on the lack of 'prettiness' in this, and other, scenes.  I just did not have the ambition this past year knowing that

no one would be visiting, not even my family.  Normally I would have nice ground cover in a scene like this, but, oh well.

The five D-1A engines were used in commuter service in the Boston area (Boston & Albany Railroad - a subsidiary of the New York Central) from 1928 to the early 1950s, when some were brought to New York City. New York Central or Boston & Albany round-roofed passenger cars would be the correct consists. The New York Central cars in my video are not correct either but they are closest that I have. I have not found any record of use on freight trains.

As I continue to clean out/organize my stuff in preparation for the new layout, I came across more relics from time past:

1A1F7E60-3EE3-4004-BEB6-33C037C2AAA8_1_201_a

This was an old train store in DC and I used bring them repairs after I had moved to Richmond  in 1985. Purchased trains there , too.....mostly track and rolling stock. Anyone else remember this place?

When Chesterfield Hobbies opened in Midlothian in the early 90s, I no longer went there.

This was a pamphlet magazine put out by TM in the mid 90s.....I think there were a total of 8 issues.....anyone else used to get these?

A72C04E0-6281-4E78-B238-33CE99C0F9B4_1_201_a

This is my layout in the attic of my former house.....it was started in 93 and came down in 03 when we moved to our present house. The attic was 14x30 with 4' knee walls.

One major lesson learned:  crawling under the layout to get to the center is fine when you're 40, by gets very old by the time you're 50!

Hi Melgar,  The NYC heavy weight cars I have are Pullman Green (same color as the milk can car) as used by the P&LE into the early 70's.

Peter, Cool finds. I remember that store well from my days of working in the city. Had a classic neon sign with the "L" logo.

That location, and in fact the entire neighborhood, is now upscale residential and commercial establishments.

Mikey: Where did you get the low bow Truck and Trailer with the Sherman on it and some of the other vehicles on you installation? I would love to get several of them also.

Hi RJT,

Some of the vehicles I got on EBAY and the hard to find came from France where we travel, there is a big WWII museum in Samuer with a large stock of Military Models,I left a lot of money there, also a big hobby shop in Lyon. The Quonset Huts came fromLionel,Korber and Menards.

Ron,

I've been looking to buy some of these. I believe there was a B&A set made by MTH. I'm about to begin construction of a kit to build a passenger car for this engine.

MELGAR

Melgar, the only thing I can say for sure that they are MTH cars.  My inventory shows purchased from a fellow forum member.  The strange thing each car is packaged in pristine individual MTH boxes that have no end labels!  I do recall buying from a forum member that lived close to MTH where he was able to get his hands on things at MTH.  Not sure if these were any of these.  One car is numbered 871 the other 866.  Again bought these because they made the perfect passenger cars for a P&LE commuter service from Pittsburgh to my hometown up into the mid 70's.

Well in the high of reverie!  Well I lubed my new 4-6-6T, checked for grease in the gear box, checked all screws to be tight including the rod screws.  Set the engine on the test stand.  Powered it up with my CAB/BASE-1l.  Programed an ID.  Ran it through all basic functions for a minute or so.

64643985-3A70-437D-B544-7AFC6C585C1F

Shut it down, had to go out for a while.

After returning home and eating went back to testing.  Was running the engine hit AUX1-8 to shut off smoke.  Heard a cracking, saw that coupler open, smoke was billowing out the stacked and under the boiler and mechanism was now stuck in reverse.  Powered off!  Sounds familiar Peter.

Will have to call the rep in Concord that sold to me.  She said if any problems call her, she would set up a Repair Authorization.

This is my very first problem out of many engines.  Guess it had to happen!  I am sure Lionel will square it away

What is the issue with this engine? I have one but haven't run it yet and don't plan to use the smoke feature. Is the issue tied to using the smoke feature? I still need to replace the front pilot but I have the part already.

I am sure a board or two blew.  Forgot to include in my original description that when the smoke was billowing out from under the boiler there was that distinctive smell of over heating (burning) electronic components,  At least one other forum member had similar problems which required new board.

Highly recommend you try and run your engine.
