Since 2020 is soon to be upon us, I thought I would share photos of this 100-year old American Flyer set.  It features a 1218 and 3 blue cars.

That's Flyer? I have had this for years from my dad's collection and assumed it was Marx. Mine looks repainted and had this odd huge headlight hood. Added on? Also the ends have these odd circular details.

Yes, your engine is American Flyer.  As you guessed the headlight hood is added.

The circular details on the ends, are where headlight holders were added to some of the engines.  I noted on my 1920 engine that these circular details were not present, but they are on the later engines (see photo below, although it does not show up well, it is there).  Your engine could be one of the engines, where there was no in-body mounted headlight initially, but where headlights were added to the roofs (to help sell the engines), in the approximate location where your large headlight hood was added.
