Weight of Lionel engines | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum

I am curious about something and I was wondering if anyone would know the answer. I have a Lionel New York Central E7 A-A TMCC (6-24579), purchased new in 2007. The powered unit weighs a ton, especially when compared with the non-powered unit, which makes perfect sense. After many years out of the hobby, I recently jumped back in with the purchase of a Lionel Legacy New York Central E8 A-A set (6-84088). Not only does the powered unit weigh a lot less than the E7, but I can't even tell the difference between the powered and non-powered unit by weight! How did they do that??

Many of the TMCC diesels have a die cast fuel tank that makes up a good portion of the heft.

I'm guessing the newer models have a plastic fuel tank?

Your NYC E-7's have die-cast frames and the E-8's have stamped metal frames.
