I have two Lionel H16-44 engines.  They are quite old and are equipped with TMCC.  My set up is a postwar ZW, a command base, and the original Cab one with the antenna.  I just recently tried to run the two engines after having been on the shelf for a long time.   When I attempt to run them they start off like a bat out of **** and cannot be controlled.  I have other engines that use tmcc.  I have 2 K Lines, an Atlas, and 3 engines converted to tmcc by a friend many years ago.  They run fine.  The Lionel engine numbers are 6-28838 and 28811. Does anybody have any idea what is happening?

Dave is correct, that's the likely issue.  If you open them up and the ring is still intact but the adhesive has dried and it's not in place, you can glue it back in place.  If the magnet ring has already self-destructed, then you will need a new magnet ring, that's a bit more work.

The ring is dirt cheap at $1.50, but in order to use it, you have to pull the flywheel, glue the ring on, and replace the flywheel.  There is also a replacement flywheel with a setscrew that eliminates the replacement of the original and makes the task a bit easier, that's $9.50.

If you have a wheel/flywheel puller, you can actually use the replacement flywheel and magnet without removing the motor.  However, if you opt to use the original flywheel and replace the magnet, then you must remove the motor to press the flywheel back on as you have to support the motor axle at the worm to avoid damaging the motor pressing the flywheel on.

Finally, the replacement flywheel and magnet don't fit that well together, so it's a bit tricky to get the magnet glued to the flywheel as you have to add some spacers to center it while gluing, don't know what Lionel was thinking...
