LUG Fall 2017The Lionel Legacy Users Group Meeting

Friday April 28th, 2017      7:45 AM-8:45

Orange Hall Meeting Room

(Enter through the Orange Hall Lobby and right of the concession stand, down the hallway)

The Agenda with the questions submitted to Lionel is attached at the bottom of this post or

I will have a limited amount of agendas on site.  I encourage you to print one out and bring it with you.

The Lionel Legacy Users Group is not associated with Lionel Trains in any way other than sharing the enjoyment and trading of information related to operating the Lionel Legacy System!

It's already that time once again for the Legacy Users Group Meeting.  Once again thanks to the folks from the EDTCA we will hold our meeting in the Orange Hall Meeting room.  The room is convenient to the meet and very spacious.

As always we will solicit questions here on the OGR forum in this thread to send into JonZ and his team at the Legacy Labs. Please make sure all questions are clear and to the point so we can get the best answer back from Lionel. I may ask for a clarification if need be. We will be much stricter on the content that can be submitted and keep the question subjects to operation of Legacy, iCab, LCS, and Legacy products.  All production questions should be asked at the Lionel booth or to Lionel's "Talk to Us".  As always, operational suggestion will be forwarded as well.

We once again will support the LCS partners and will have any updates and information on hand.

If you would like to get your Legacy system updated to the latest and greatest we'll have a couple of options.  Bring your system (Cab2 and Base) and we can update it.  Bring 2 black or writable GRJ modules and we'll walk you through the procedure to make them and test them before you leave.  The current versions are 1.6 for the Legacy base and 1.61 for CAB2.

As of right now there is a lot up in the air as far as the agenda goes.  The questions as of late have been less and less and as I said that's probably a good thing. We've had minimal updates to Legacy and the iCab system since the fall.  We have reached out to Dean Brasseur to join us and he has graciously agreed to stop in and answer your customer service questions.

Update:  Dave Olsen Lionel's Engineering Manager will be joining us for the Legacy Meeting.

Your host for the Legacy Users Group is Marty Eibeck (MartyE)

We are planning to record the event once again for those who cannot attend. Thanks to Dave Slie for providing this!

As always, I am sure some of the questions asked here could be answered by some of our forum members but I ask they refrain from doing so.  I promote that we'll send the questions to JonZ and Lionel to answer and it's what i do.

I will have to cut the questions off a little earlier this year as I might be attending the NAB show directly before York so I'll need to get them in and back before I leave.

Cut Off for all questions to Lionel and JonZ will be April 14th.  This will give me time to get them back and the agendas pdf'd and printed before hand.  Get them in!  Again please make sure before they are submitted they are clear and to the point so we can have Jon and his team give you the best answer he can.

Question 1. Is Bluetooth control for Legacy locomotives possible/ on the horizon?

Question 2. Will there be an Icab equivalent for android users like myself who have no intention of ever getting any "I" things?

EDIT (Questions added 3/19/17)

Question 3. Between approx. 1998 and 2008, Lionel used "Box" infrared sensors for communication between steam locomotives. Starting in 2008 and to this day, the sensors are "eyelet" sensors. Was there a "legacy" reason for this switch, or purely commercial?

Question 4. Do all legacy engines have rule 17 lighting? I noticed that some older (2007ish) legacy engines do not have rule 17 lighting.

Question 5. Is it possible that the footprint of the legacy board could be made smaller for other scales (for example, HO scale)?

Question 6. Some Legacy engines, even to this day, have "railsounds lite." Is there any difference between "railsounds lite" and legacy railsounds 5.0, 5.5, 6.0 and later?

(More will be added later)

With a little more than a month to go I just want to again ask if you submit questions please have them posted by April 14th.  I have noted Nick's above.  (Thanks for being clear, it makes the answers easier to get.)

In case you missed it, Dave Olsen, Lionel's Engineering Manager will be joining us.  For a change I am told he will have some questions for us.  This maybe you chance to have your opinion heard on future Legacy enhancements.

More questions.

Question 6. Is there a parts list for the Vision Reefer sets (item numbers 6-81142, 6-83545, and 6-83549)?

Question 7. When TMCC 1 and TMCC 2 (Legacy) engines are having signal problems (as evidenced by flickering headlights) there is a trick called the "hand trick" which is when you hold your hand right above the locomotive with signal problems, it temporarily regains signal. Why does this trick work? (I tried to be as descriptive as possible.)

As a side note, I seem to have monopolized the question section of this thread. Sorry about that.

No worries.  I will ask question 6 to Dean when he is present.

Map posted in first posts of this thread.

An issue with the Legacy 360W PowerMaster was highlighted in another topic that I liked discussed.  Its not so much a problem with the PM360, but how I want to use it.

BACKGROUND: I currently use TPC400s on my layout.  The TPC can accept up to 400 watts input, and has one transformer input to accept this power and any transformer can be used.  Lionel PowerMasters can be used, but you must get an adapter plug or cut off the PoHo's plug to attach to the TPC.  You can use one PoHo for power, or a Y cable to attach two PoHos to that one input to get 360 watts.  I use one PoHo for most running, but need both PoHos when I bring out my long passenger train.

Lionel has not yet put the PM 360's manual on their web page, but discussions on the forum show the PM 360 has two input connector jacks designed just for the PowerHouse plug.  Lionel has a caution that states: "Always use two PowerHouse power supplies.  Never operate with only one PowerHouse."  So my specific questions are:

1.  What is the danger, or what will be damaged, if using only one PowerHouse connected to the 360W PowerMaster?

2.  Can a Y adapter, connecting one PowerHouse to the two connector jacks on the 360W PowerMaster, be used?  I assume the power input switch setting would be set at 270W.

Thanks.

ADDED:  Dave Olson gave an excellent answer to this in a different topic.  I'd post the link but don't know how to do it on my iPad.  The topic was Legacy PowerMaster 360 power supplies.

Legacy MU Question:
I like to create a TRain with 2 engines  not coupled into the same train.  I do this so that I can maintain the same distance between both trains at all times!  The ability to assign the horn/whistle to both trains is fun, but when you create a train like this the base thinks the second engine is a slave to the first and turns off the headlight.  You can call up the second engine by its ENG ID and turn the headlight back on but when you toggle back to the TRain and give it a command the second engine's light goes back off.   Can you create a way for the base to recognize that this operation is in fact NOT an MU but rather 2 separate trains?  Maybe install a "space" on the CAB 2 in the build screen so that the base will recognize this as a different operation than an MU.

Legacy Question:
Can you make the Aux 3 button operate the city horns on engines equipped with both horns and whistles like the GS-2, GS-4, AC-12.  I swear I recall on my old first generation Legacy GS-4 that there was a horn icon on the CAB2.  Maybe I am not remembering that properly.  Regardless pushing two buttons to operate the horn is a bit of nuisance.

LCS Question
I use the LCS in conjunction with BPC2s and ASC2.  The system works great and I love the custom control panels....very handy!  I also use Legacy Powermasters to control my power districts.  Is there a "digital" toggle button in LCS so that I can control also the Powermasters with my iPad?  If there is one I have never found it.

Please consider making an STM that will communicate the position of points of switches controlled by DZ2500s to LCS!  I was bummed that the STM2 did not do that.

Please consider/develop more uses for the sensor tracks.  That product is underutilized at the moment.  How about breakdown units that have various time bomb features that trigger after the engine crosses over the sensor track x number of times?   Can the sensor track communicate with ASC2s? Can an engine crossing over the sensor track trigger an accessory to operate?

Thank you for creating fun toys to play with!

Even more questions: (I have a more inquisitive mind than I thought)

1. There is another "trick" around the forum called the "cell phone trick." Using a mobile device with a camera aimed directly at the IR sensor on the locomotive so equipped, a "purple or red screen" indicates that the IR is working. Why does that work?

2. Why did Lionel move from Modular Legacy boards to the RCMC and what is the history that can be given about that?
