When it comes to York, Clem's Primer IS the Cliffs Notes...

 

My advice to York first (and even second) timers is to take the time to go through the Primer, and make sure that you bring the fairgrounds map with you.  I forgot it on my second York and I almost missed a hall (the White Hall) where I ended up finding a few goodies.

 I've heard there are shows at night at hotels and breakfasts, etc. 

Wednesday evening is the DCS Users Group Meeting and Friday morning is the Legacy Users Group Meeting. All of the details will be in the threads for those meetings, soon to be posted on their respective forums.

Unless it is changing this meet, those have been on Friday morning, not Thursday morning.  Oct 2014 Summary.

There is a "show", actually a "show and tell" Marx meet at night chaperoned by John Fox from Chicago and others, where people bring in their unusual Marx trains (and

toys) to display and discuss.  The mailed out TCA brochure lists it and others. Us  "old timers" find it hard anybody could miss any of the buildings, but maybe with the stadium no longer used, it is possible.  My advice is to check out every building once, and you will see whether there is activity in it, or not.

It happened to me because my first two Yorks were Friday-only visits, and I was overwhelmed by the size of the event, considering that the largest train event I had been to prior to York was a WGH show, and it was just in one building.  By my 3rd York, I was familiar enough with the fairgrounds as to not miss anything.

 

It is sometimes easy to forget what York is like for a first-timer, but with only 13 Yorks under my belt so far, I'm still close enough, and young enough, to still remember that first time.

My mistake was in stating my personal preference for when the meeting should be, rather than when it actually is.

Just in case you don't know:

* You must be a member of TCA (or come as a registered guest) to be able to attend the York show.

* You also must register (pay, and get a badge) for this show.  You can do that online or at the show.  I suggest doing it now, online, because when you get to the show, you won't want to stand in line to do it then.  You'll be too anxious to "get to it."

Without a doubt, the best train meet know to mankind. Always has been a very good time for us.

 

Smart move in making your York Meet plans.

York week starts the week of non bathing and not using deodorants. 

Take lots of $$$$$$. You will be like a young boy in your first trip to a candy store.

This will be York number 70 for me.  Do not forget Ruby Tuesdays on Thursday.  Great place to say hello to forum members new and old.  Great friends, good food, and cold beer.

This forum proves "What goes on at York we talk about for months".

Isn't strange that someone starts a thread, & then never comes back on it again to atleast say thanks for your help.

Sometimes people ask for help diagnosing a problem, or repairing a train, and never come back to let people know how they made out. Not looking for thanks, just to close the loop.

to me , the best thing is Thursdays at Tuesdays.  it used to be the train layouts, but that has dwindled.

Well I have never been to York but from what I have heard it is really a secret society with bandit meets, obscure and strange rituals such as no cameras and cell phones, special TCA entry rules and hand shakes, one way aisles and you better follow the arrows or be banned for life, OGR, DCS and Legacy meets whatever that means, and weird buildings named Orange, Black and White, etc., but they aren't even painted those colors.    I also hear that everyone who goes returns home broke and has to sneak a car load of trains into the house past the wife.  The York demons made me buy all those trains is the often heard excuse.   Why would anyone go?

Maybe he didn't feel welcome with the first response.  "Give me a call and I will tell you"  this is a public forum.  His questioned should have been answered in public.

That's one of the things that make this hobby great - the camaraderie we share with each other.  I'd have called Eddie in a heartbeat.

Joe, anyone who has to sneak trains into his home is sad.  I have heard those stories and can say none of my friends have to do that.

That is he only thing on his site that has ever made me get a negative though. When some of the very experienced guys/gals go out of their way to answer a question or assist and the person never comes back to say a single word.

Very ill mannered in my opinion.

 

It may just be me. be it seems to be happening a lot lately.

 

I'm still giving this gentleman the benefit of the doubt because he just joined the 10th and this is the only thing he has ever posted.

I think you guys are over-judging the poor guy.

 

If he didn't know anything about this site and googled his way here, he very well may not have any concept of how quickly he may get a response.  (yeah, I know if he examined all the pages he would see how active the board is, but maybe he didn't look that close)

 

He very well could have posted the question and said to himself he would check back in a few days to see if anyone answered his question. 

 

Most casual visitors are not going to be on here 3-4 times a day to check progress like some of us regulars do. (occasionally guilty as charged! )

 

Of course there is always some remote possibility a new user is a troll just to see how many responses he can get, but I'm willing to give someone the benefit of the doubt for more than a day or 2.

 

I'm more suspicious of new users who post 30 threads over a couple days with "why is there air?" type of questions...

It's not all about trains

 

I get drunk and dance on the tables Ruby Tuesday. Not pretty but the tips cover my scrapple bill

Be kind of hard to do it Thursday morning since Marty is not in York until that afternoon

But Barry someday drop in, Fridays are not that tough

I certainly look forward to this.

 

This will be interesting counterpoint to the John & Chuck show.
