Just like the title says, I accidentally ended up with a 2816 hopper and would really like to get more. But its too tall for my 249e. I know this is basically a rehash question for many but I am not that well schooled in the ways all things shiny.

FWIW, there were several prewar sets with 261, 262, and probably 249E's that included 800 series freight cars. I won't disagree that a 263E would be a better match, but the smaller steamers were also sold in sets with that size of cars.
The 763e would be an option too. I think the 227 semi-scale switcher was sold with 2800 series freight as well. Lots of good options for those cars. Post pictures when you get your loco.
Ahh, yes, I forgot about the diecast steamers. The 226E would also be good as it was also sold with 2800 series cars. 250E Hiawatha as well.
I was going to say the 226E, but I'll bet a 225E would look good too.
