I bought a MTH Premier Auxiliary Tender a year ago. It's die cast all around and need help removing the paint/ decals. It has the Chessie System Safety Train decal, If I would of known that it was a PITA to remove the decals on it, I would've looked for a non-Pocahontas N&W tender.

What would you recommend for a paint remover that wouldn't compromise the ability to paint the die cast after soaking it and scrubbing the shell? We have tried Denatured Alcohol, it did nothing. I heard that brake fluid works but I'm concerned if that is used, it will make it unpaintable.

Thanks

Be sure there’s no plastic parts anywheres, & completely soak all die cast parts in lacquer thinner. Use a suitable container to soak. Dunk the components, and walk away for a couple hours. Paint will fall off. Blow dry with compressed air, & that will help remove stubborn pockets. Inspect your work, soak again as necessary. Strain leftover thinner for re-use. Wash components with hot soapy water & scotchbrite to aid as a prep for new paint.

Sounds like a good solution.   Years ago, I had a pair of MTH 4 bay hoppers.    I wanted to repaint them to B&O because they were very close to a model of that prototype.

I could not remove the lettering from these cars.   I tried everything that is considered "safe" for plastic.   I even tried some solvent that were iffy.    In the end I was removing the plastic from around the lettering, but the lettering was intact.

That adventure made me think 2-3 times before buying an MTH car with the idea of repainting.   Their paint or whatever it is/was is super extrememly durable.    I wish my automobile had paint like that!

The nice thing about metals is that you can remove the factory lettering (it is seldom "decals"; rather, paint or ink) using acetone without affecting the underlying paint - at least I have never damaged the paint. Barring a needed color change, re-lettering can then only involve decals, not a re-paint.
