What is the difference between the DCS wifi unit and the DCS wifi explorer unit. I have seen both for sale with about a $50 price difference on average.

the explorer is a small version of an "all in one". It has a 5? amp limit and for use on small layouts with 3? engines or less. It has a single channel TIU built in for use with the DCS app. It does not support all the features of DCS.
The DCS Explorer has a limited feature set and is intended for ready-to-run train set customers and hobbyists who are just starting out in the command control world. The app that controls the DCS Explorer has In-App purchase options that allow the user to obtain access to additional features and functions. While the feature set in the DCS Explorer is more than adequate for small and mid-size layouts and gives the user control of up to three locomotives on the same track at the same time, it cannot take advantage of the additonal features found in the In-App purchase options. Users wishing to utilize those features found in the In-App purchase options can only do so if they replace the DCS Explorer with the DCS WIU Wifi Interface Unit and the DCS TIU Track Interface Unit.
The MTH DCS WIFI unit attaches to the 4 channel TIU. The system can be expanded to cover even the largest layouts and large numbers of engines. It makes the TIU's usable with the DCS app. You need one per TIU.
Thanks Joe. I tried the wifi on a friends layout and it took some getting used to. I am thinking of trying it on my own, just not sure if I'm ready to give up my DCS remotes.
The great thing is you don't have to give up anything. I use the remote at the same time as the app. Our grandson has one and I use the other.
The app is much faster at certain things. It takes getting used to if you started with the remote. For new people, I think they'll wonder why we resisted.
