I'm trying to see how many cars could make an ideal sized train for my CNJ F units. I have a powered A, non powered B and A.

I can remember seeing CNJ A-B-A "F Units" hauling 50 to 100 cars, back in the early 1950s.
So I wonder if using a Lionel powered A and powered B... I could probably haul up to 30 cars.. Maybe 25 at the max.

That will depend on the sharpness of your curves and any grades on your layout.
Kinda like how much does it cost to cut down a tree????
So many variables impossible to have one answer that works for all.....curves, grades, type track, power supply and even wiring all play a part. Best way.....run them and see.

Oh, I forgot to add. I don't have my own layout. My home's basement is awful, so I belong to several O scale modular groups. This way people can run 50 car trains.

Well there you go! Put together a nice selection of eastern railroad boxcars, gondolas, covered cement hoppers, etc. and have at a beautiful 50 car freight train.
