I recently had to replace my 12 year old iMac because Apple quit doing updates.  It still works great and the 24 inch monitor has a very high resolution.  I would like to be able to use it in my train room.  I am hoping I can find camera that I can mount on a flatcar and be able to see the view as the train goes around the layout.  Does anyone know of a video camera that will transmit directly to an iMac to make this work?

Appreciate any ideas!

Thanks,

Don

Why would that be a cause for replacement, especially if it still works great?

I have a mid-2010 Mac Pro that I do my video editing work on. I run OSX Mojave and Final Cut Pro X 10.4 on it because that's as far as I can go with it.  However, it does everything I need it to do, so I have no plans to replace it, no matter what Apple decides.

The biggest problem is that you are no longer getting security updates. If you use that machine to talk to the Internet or do email, it could leave you vulnerable to someone exploiting a security hole in the OS, when an OS is supported they keep sending updates. Microsoft just went through that with Windows 10 and 11, they found a major weakness and put a a huge update to fix it.

If you take the appropriate local precautions, put your machine behind a router, use a VPN, stay away from shady web sites, and don’t open email from people you don’t know, those so-called “security updates” aren’t really needed.

I still run Windoze 7 Pro on my two PCs and have had no problems whatsoever. Same for my “outdated” MAC running Mojave.

Rich,

I'm not trying to be alarmist but you are one lucky "success" out of hundreds of millions of failures.  The bad guys just haven't found you yet.

What you're saying was once good enough but not anymore.  Especially over the last year the situation has changed drastically for the worse.  Hackers, funded by big money from rogue states, are digging deeper than ever into the operating systems of computers, as well as those in modems and routers.

If you want to continue with Win 7 and Mojave you'll still be fine for a while, but you need to unplug your machine from the internet soon, upgrade, or add in something like PC Matic, in order to stay secure.

PC Matic?  I don't think so!

From this: PCMag PC Matic Home Review

Would you buy an antivirus utility that’s absolutely guaranteed to block execution of every single piece of malware, be it a virus, Trojan, ransomware, spyware, or any other nefarious ilk? Would you still buy it after learning that it blocks every good program as well? Sounds crazy, but there’s a path to sanity. The app would simply need a comprehensive whitelist of known good programs that it should leave alone. That’s what PC Matic Home aims to do. Any program it doesn’t recognize gets put on ice, until the analysis system at the company’s HQ determines if it’s good or bad. That analysis is meant to happen within 24 hours, but in testing, after three days most unknowns remained unknown. And those who choose PC Matic's protection must prepare for the possibility it will block valid programs.

My 2009  iMac is a hand me down from my son and I have really enjoyed using it for the last 7 years. The latest update is would accept was OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 .  Unfortunately, eventhough  it still functions great for many operations, it has become a nightmare to try to use to browse web content.  The first notice I had of theses issues was several months ago while using this forum.  I noticed that when someone posted a video on the OGR forum, the picture would appear and the start arrow but no time showed and it would not play.  I mentioned that at the time on the support forum.  Then I noticed that other sites I visited would often not show content or play a video.  Then the Home Depot site would not allow me to open it.  While trying to post listings on eBay, I would get to the last page and it would not let me finish so I had to use my iPad to do listings.  But it really became an issue while shopping for Christmas gifts.  One son and my grandchildren live 1600 miles away so I do most of their shopping on line because of free shipping.  On five or six occasions, I would go through the whole check out process and at the end, I could not use my credit card.  Simply going back through the whole process on my 2019 iPad allowed me to complete the purchase.  Also, Netflix and Amazon Prime were complaining that I would not be able to get all content because my computer was not updated to a later opening system.

I really did not want to have to get a new computer, but the aggravation had become more that I wanted to tolerate.

johnrr6, thank you for the suggestion.  I will check it out.

What Browser are you using? From the description it sounds to me more like an incompatibility with the browser. If you are using safari, try downloading Chrome or Firefox, and see if you see the same problem. If you are using another browser, check and see what version you are running and download a later version and see what happens.

The other thing I recommend is to go into the browser and clear cookies and cache, both of those could cause problems as well, but I would try another browser or updating your current one.

The problem using the old OSX operating systems is that you cannot simply download a current version of Chrome, Safari or Firefox. For example, Firefox requires at least an OSX 10.12 (Sierra). Chrome will not update past version 49.0.26 if you are using OSX 10.6, 10.7 or 10.8. (Chrome is now at version 97.0). My 11-year-old iMac using Mountain Lion with Windows 7 (using Parallels) has been extremely reliable but can't run new apps nor properly display content from many web sites. I only keep it because I have a website that is based on the old, but easy to use, iWeb software. (It also does Gmail perfectly fine.) Recognizing all of these limitations, and the fact that many of my hobbyist apps were Windows based, I have largely transitioned away from the Mac to the Windows 10 Dell XPS.

I posted this earlier but then somehow the thread got derailed.

This little camera works quite well and seems to have updated tech and software and is much easier to connect and stay connected than the Lionel Cupola Cam. Plus the little ribbon allows you to extend the camera outside an enclosure say a container on a flat car. You charge it by plugging it into a computer or a standard wall plug for charging a phone….and you have several hours of use. My one caveat is you need a good WiFi. But that’s really true for any of these tiny streaming cameras.

I got this one off amazon for like $45....works great and I use it on a Flat Car just like you describe.  I think it actually works better than the Lionel CupolaCam Caboose that I have as the Camera Tech in it seems waaaay out of date.  This is fast and easy....good quality video and will display on virtually anything.
