Right  now MTH makes two kinds of premier passenger cars, HW and LW. Both are generic cars with different paint schemes.

Im not talking about having every prototypical detail but how about correct window placement, correct diaphragms, etc.

They  have done it in their HO, and the European line although I'm not sure how correct those cars are.

what are your thoughts?

I've been asking Mike for 21" passenger cars every chance I get, hoping the improvements you mention would accompany them.  At least all the sets don't include dome cars where they weren't used now.

Today I picked up my long coveted MTH Premier Penn Central passenger set.  Not that there was an alternative.  Lots of PC locomotives out there but no one else makes matching passenger sets.  Sometimes, availability or unavailability of a particular road name brings you to a decision point.  But they are nice cars.

Now that I have them, Golden Gate Depot will announce a scale, detailed P C passenger set any minute now!

At least all the sets don't include dome cars where they weren't used now.

Or come with four domes trains in the west.

MTH's HO and Euorpean O scale cars are beautiful.  The HO Daylight cars are the best of they type ever made in that scale at any price.  I would love to have the opportunity to buy O scale cars made with a similar level of detail and accuracy.

MTH could do some work on their streamliners for sure. Something other than ACF cars. As for their heavyweights , ignoring GGD cars they are at the top in terms of detail compared to the other 18 cars. Lionel is now catching up with end detail but I have been using MTH detail to upgrade my older Lionel, K-Line, and Atlas heavyweights. Plus they are the only manufacturer (again other than GGD) to offer air conditioned cars. Everyone else is stuck in the teens and 20s era. Maybe the shiny passengers are just sweating too much.

I agree with having LED lighted passenger cars. Also air conditioned RK  heavyweights would be a nice feature, and not to push it, but more detail exterior for the streamliner dining cars as in HO with service door and windows for a galley. I know...it will cost more. But I like the RK size. Full scale is not for everyone. I have to think of the space I have for a layout.

When is MTH going to upgrade their passenger cars with new car styles?

The short answer "Not in our life time."

Now before you get down on me let me say I'm a BIG fan of MTH. I have nine of their passengers sets. It just bothersome to me they always say the tooling cost too much but they have the money for tooling in the other scales to offer new things.

Now I understand Return on Investment and the HO market is larger than O. I don't want MTH or its dealers to not make a profit but the O Gauge/Scale market is what put MTH where is today and now they have been branching out I just feel we are being left behind.

There are so many more choices in O Scale now than at any time in the past.  I guess lusting after really good passenger cars is ok as a hobby, but in reality the current selection is mind-boggling.

Granted, we are on the O-27 forum, and most of you need the shorter versions (difficult to see how correct windows will fit) but if it is scale length you want, it is darn near all out there.  My scale 2-rail collection is overwhelmed with really nice K-Line 21" cars.  In my string of Budd cars I have K-Line, Sunset, Mac Shops, and even an ancient Kasiner - all are quite acceptable for 2- rail scale.  Hard to believe that O-27 would demand better.

As for heavyweights - I have the PSC variety, but if I did plastic I would replace them all with the 3rd Rail cars.  Except for the Harrimans . . .
