The upgrades are free downloads. You only need a 1 time purchase of a black module to make a system module or modify an old blue one and do the same using the LSU software. 

I'm cheap, so I make my own "black" modules.

you missed the point. 

you do not have to send any money you just make your own.

but if you do not want to do that then ro  has them available.

In checking the readme file for v1.6; I don't really see any need to upgrade from the current V1.52, so I am just going to leave it for now.

I'm still running 1.54, haven't seen any reason to update to 1.6 right now.

1.53 is probably the most needed here in the 60hz world.  1.54 was strictly for the folks using 50hz power.

1.6 adds functionality for the new diner cars and the hopefully sooner to be released sensor boxcar.

Here is the complete list from the READ ME doc

* Adds support for Legacy Station Sounds Diner cars.

* Adds new TxIR (Transmit IR) button to the "Custom" tab of the CAB2 display. This feature is for use with upcoming Lionel SensorCar, which allow trains pulled by older locomotives to work with SensorTrack.

* Allows proper CAB2/SensorTrack configuration of current or future products with SensorTrack compatability, such as Subway, Breakdown B-unit, Freight Car, Station Sounds cars and Legacy Crane/Boom Car.

* Train builder: Fixed bug where Train Link wasn't automatically set on accessories, passenger car, etc. when that device's TMCC ID was between 1 to 9.

I have 1.6 on mine & everything works well.
