You will get many "best" suggestions. One thing I will say, finding motel rooms in York is easier than it was years ago...even "last minute" ones. My priority has been to find a place very near to the fairgrounds. Since I could drive home in less that 2 hours, why pay for a room that takes a 45 minute drive to get there? I also want a clean room that is no higher than $100./night. However, if my wife was going with me, we would be at $150. plus most likely. In fact, we went to a wedding in York last week, and that is what we paid.

I have stay at the Courtyard on the Northeast side (Lionel reps stay there) but I prefer the Wyndham gardens.  First the parking lot has bandit shows before York starts and its a short drive to the fairgrounds   I found some good deals at their shows.  The courtyard is nice but it can be a 20 min ride to the fairgrounds.  Both are over a 100 a night but if your walking all day you will want something nice.  I started by staying at the courtyard but now it's the Wyndham for me.

The Laquinta is really nice.  It's in the same complex as the Quaker Steak and Lube restaurant.   The only downside is that as of this October it's a 3 night minimum stay.  It's newer hotel and a bit cheaper then the other top flight hotels (at least as recently as April) but if you are staying 3 nights as a dealer it may be worth looking into.  I've stayed in the Heritage Hills Golf Resort and the Laquinta was just as good in my opinion.

"Best" is subjective.  What amenities do you want?  Are you in a loyalty program?  How far are you willing to drive?  Are you going to leave items in your car in the motel parking lot overnight?

Days Inn (former Billy Budd) treats Yorkies very well and is relatively reasonably priced with a good breakfast.  I use loyalty points and it makes the Wyndham Garden very attractive.  If a person doesn't mind a 35-minute drive, there are some very inexpensive places in Carlisle.

If the budget covers $150 per night, there are a lot of good choices.

I would avoid the Super 8 on US 30 - it gets cheaper each year; it was rather scary the last time I stayed there about 4 years ago, and it doesn't look like it's gotten any better.  (And my standards and expectations are fairly low.)

One other piece of advice - make cancellable reservations now, but check back a couple of days before the meet - you might be able to score a bargain.

I'd love to see Menard's at York. Why, you may ask, considering I've been rather critical of their products?

Just to see the look on the faces of MTH, Lionel, Atlas, etc when their booth is swamped.

Oh yea.....I REALLY want to see the look on the guy's face that was selling Menard's cars at $60 - $80 a pop last year. Didn't look like he sold a thing!

I got your reply, but seriously, you could bring a small Ryder type moving truck (the kind that goes up over the drivers cab) full of what you think would sell.  Sell to and satisfy as many buyers as possible on mon and tuesday at the wyndham show.  That would reduce the demand and crowd level for you at the fairgrounds to a manageable level.  Tuesday day call back home with a list of what more to bring to york.  That truck can leave wed morning and have a day and a half to get to york fairgrounds.  They can resupply your main truck and be a second warehouse for the show.  That truck could leave Saturday morning to take back home the 3.5 items that aren't selling well.

You can raise the prices 1.00 to 3.00 per car to offset some of the expenses.  You would still be more than 50-80% cheaper than your competition.   Many people who dont have access to a menards would probably gladly pay the extra $ to have the car in hand.  I can easily buy 3-4 of your cars for the price of some other brand cars.

Plus you would have first hand, face to face exposure to a large segment of the hobby that has 20x deeper pockets than other train shows.  This would allow you marketing input and showcase your product line.  Possibly collect email addresses for future sale notifications.

Hi Eddie G., For a decade, twice a year, I have stayed, for the York Meet in York, at the following very pleasant motel, in Lancaster, a 30min. drive, due east, along Rt.30, from York:

Holiday Inn Express , at Rockvale-Lancaster Outlets

24 South Willowdale Drive

Lancaster, PA 17602

phone: (717) 293-9500

I like it very much and would not stay anywhere else.
