Forum Members,
Thought I would do a quick poll... which engine do you like the best of these two?

For me its the 408E with two motors it will pull anything. It is my favorite standard gauge locomotive. As for the color of these two locomotives. If I had to pick one I would still take the 408E.
Thanks LV! Keep it coming folks!

For color I lean toward the Classic Era earth tones. In the 2nd Tinplate Classic movie there are quite a few shots of the Turquoise 408 with matching cars.
I have a 408 in Mustard that I like.
Jim,
Do you have a photo of the mustard set?

I have to go with the 408E for the engine and color! Terry
Yep, 408E and color for me too. It is just a very classic throwback look that can't be beat.
408E hands down. The look and color are hard to beat.
The 408 is a winner with me.
The 408E - I own two MTH traditional ones - dark green and apple green.
NOT big on pink, turquoise or mustard!
That's like comparing apples and oranges. They are both good in their own way.
I have the same 408E! Love it! On the other hand, I won't take anything away from that steamer, pretty sharp!
hello guys and gals.............
I take the 400E, like the orange colors........

I like the 408E better because it is a throwback. I can see many specific road names being built in the future to expand tinplate popularity. I'd get a Pennsy version if it was offered, probably.

I like the 408E in that color over the 400E in those colors. But The ultimate is the 400 in Blue Comet Colors.
They are both nice, but I prefer the steamer!
D&RGW with an oil burning steam locomotive??
and isn't a fix to the domes of the #400 long overdue? how hard would it be to swap the domes so they make more sense in their positioning also getting rid of the sand line coming out of the steam dome.
I like both. But it's Steam all the way for me.
408E for me.... the colors on the 400 don't do it for me
Let's keep it simple.......408E hands down. Did Lionel ever make a Rio Grande in the original era? Trick question LOL!!!!
Here's one for the 400.
Jim
400E in those colors doesn't do it for me. The front dome is the sand dome. Steam dome is always at the highest point of the boiler. Lionel fixed the 260E when they put both pipes from the sand dome on the 263E. The 400E should be done that way also.
... The front dome is the sand dome. Steam dome is always at the highest point of the boiler. ...
not always...

Gentlemen,
I like them both but the 400E is my kind of Tin PLate.

The 408E for me.
Personally, I like all tinplate. But if I had to choose, it would be the 408E. I really like the electrics.

Steamer...
I have both a 408E and a 400E and really like them both but to me it's like comparing apples to oranges. But with regard to your two choices it would have to be the 400E, I like the paint scheme. Everybody's likes and dislikes are different, or said differently, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Having said that and not criticizing your choices I do not care for that color of blue, I find it very unappealing. And if you haven't seen one in person the blue is much more vivid than in the stock MTH photo. Here's a link to one on ebay to give you an idea of how much "louder" it is in person and this picture is in low light.
